5-6 years ago the storm werent travelling that great, win a few loose a few and crowds were not that great which made the storm doctor their crowd figures and there was some complaints from other clubs that were not getting their gate share. Melbourne was a slowly sinking ship and something had to be done to save the Storm and keep them in Melbourne what better way to do that than by winning a gf.
with the storm into their 1st GF since 99 things looked better for them but it still was not enough so turning a blind eye to the cap allowed the storm to keep their big names and alike and signed a couple more, not too many at once, but a couple, there were a few question as to how they could fit the players they had but not much of a fuss was made about it, the nrl made issues about the tackling style of the storm thus drawing attention away from possible cap breaches etc and still giving the storm publicity in melbourne raising their profile.
by this stage the AFL had only just started talking about maybe looking into another afl team in sydney, just talk at this stage, Melbourne get help from the judiciary, NRL and officials (how many disallowed trys did we get in that final against the storm in 07) along with a few other things through out the year, but scattered as to not arouse suspicion and the storm win the next gf, by this stage the crowds had climbed back up a bit.
but things were to be kept this way for a while to entrench the pride and passion into the supporters to keep them coming back and not fade away again so the nrl and the storm work together to keep the game alive in Melbourne.
JOB DONE! so they thought
the talks of a 2nd afl team in sydney are well past the just talk stage now and to combat the growing support it seemed to be developing back in melbourne the storm and the nrl had to come up with something to stop the public interest from being diverted to the afl so the storm with their over the cap players had a barnstorming year only to be pipped at the post by Manly who (and i had to admit it) were totally awesome that day, but it was 3 gf's in a row and they really worked with that.
but came 09 and the storm and the nrl think that all is ok but the storm play a few very ordinary games, well below par, ok they think well make the finals and see how things are travelling, they change venues, line-ups and training procedures to get to the final after beating a lack lustre manly and broncos who both played very ordinarily, NOW....bring on the eels, playing like there is no tomorrow and beating anybody game enough to face them, the NRL are now faced with a dilemma the storm who are lucky to be there facing a red hot eels outfit, now midway through the season the storm paying about $9 to win the gf and parra $150 and the bookies are destined to loose Millions should the mighty eels win the gf and and who are some of the big sponsors of the nrl? ....footybet, sportstab and alike.....if the eels win the gf the nrl looses millions in sponsorship as the bookies go broke.
still keeping in mind that if the storm win, that will be even more of their players that will get a pay rise should they win, but surely their cap has been pushed to the limit if not breached already
but
if the eels win, millions of dollars in sponsorship will surely be lost, on comes archer who i believe was told to make some bad calls against the eels. he made a couple especially the slater (SCUMBAG) strip, we were on our way to winning against 13 players and a ref.
ultimately a win win for the nrl and the storm but now the nrl has to turn a blind eye to the question marks over the storm salary cap and its possible 2nd, 3rd or 4th party payments.
basically the storm needed help to stay in melbourne and to keep the game alive down there they needed some big help to combat the strangle hold the AFL has there all-be-it at the expense of the rest of the teams and their fans.
proving this theory may be a bit hard to do but it has to make you wonder doesn't it????????????????
But on another note, i really feckin hate the Storm now, how many gf shots do they need at a title? Im sure its not jsut me but 4 gf's in a row... its just gettin boring! Melbourne vs someone else is just a really lame as a showpiece for the last game of the season, even though they have half the team being representative players. And that last call in the grand final by Archer was pathetic... i would have rathered to lost outright than have that last moment in the game cuz then we could all accept that we were beaten by the better team on the day. But NO we all have to wait 3 and a bit months for it all to start again and go through all the emotions again.
I wil say this though IF it all is a conspiracy on who is influenced on who gets to a final you can be sure that either Parra or Penrith will be gettin some title shots in the next 3 years. AFL isnt that far away for western sydney and im sure that the nrl would rather keep 2 clubs that just keep producing legions of quality juniors than some offshoot money pit in Melbourne.,
Don't worry everyone - we WILL have the last laugh.
Agree with Beau though players are attracted to the storm because of their premiership credentials and professional set up. Success breeds success.
poore, shackleton, TAHU ! they are big names haha
The Storm have been plundered of there talent over the last 4 years. The only reason they keep succeeding is because they were smart and locked down the spine of their team to long term deals, many of whome are in the top 1 or 2 players in the NRL for that position.
They are also one of the best teams in the comp for finding young talent, as we have seen with young no-name players who starred this year (nielsen, tomane, proctor, tolman) Bellamy is also a master of getting the best out no-name players, even proven nuffies like Scott Anderson and Ryan Tandy look like consistent frist graders under this guy.
And for you too say that they have signed 3 BIG name players is a bit of a stretch. John Kite didnt play any 1st grade all year and would be cheap as chips, Luke Mcdougall likewise and Lowrie has been bought as a cheap version of Dallas Johnson and would be on know more than 150k.
