How do you want to handle election discussions?

OK folks, it's become quite apparent that we're going to get a fair bit of election discussion over the course of the remaining year. However, as with all electioneering, it's become apparent that its going to involve a fair amount of argy bargy especially with the possibility that some of our high profile members are going to run. I think it's important that the issues are discussed, and I think its valuable that this site can be a forum for the business/administration issues facing the club to be discussed.

However, especially while there is still football being played, I don't want it to dominate the site at the expense of talking about the team, who let's remember are winning and playing some good footy finally!

So I think it's probably important we set some ground-rules and structure. Here's what I'm thinking. We either create a new category of blogs for the election, or perhaps have a single thread for the entire election, OR maybe a single thread for each nominee/ticket who chooses to engage with the 1Eyed Eel supporter base. I'm kind of leaning to having one thread during the season and then we expand it to a category after the Eels have finished playing for the year.

Whatever we do it's obviously important that the thread/category has independence, and I'll be asking any of our mods who have declared an interest in running not to take any moderation in that thread, and will probably centralise all those moderation decisions around someone like SuperEel 22.

All else, maybe I'm overthinking all this and we just continue as is. Anyway, give us your feedback. I'll close this thread at 5pm tomorrow so it doesn't get in the way of post-match discussion and make a decision over the following few days based on the community's thoughts.

Thats a very fair thread Phil, i think its great that no moderation will be put in, keeping in mind the rules of course, but if somebody wants to go on the campaign trail for their own cause i think its only ethical n fair that they can be questioned and have either opporsition or support or neither....

This will be easy for some people running and harder for others due to how they are percieved and their historys and actions in the past....

i for one think it should be seperate threads so things can be kept directed at the one person running, i dont think mutt would like his blog being all about bongo n vice a versa, and yes there prob should be a seperate section to discuss it

I think we need a separate place for election matters. I also believe that if members on here running want to discuss anything that is fine however they must be aware that this could lead to some hard questions and that dismissing these or name calling will do them no favours. Knowing this, they can decide to appear on here at their peril.
Perhaps this spot is the only spot that this happens as there seems to be a but of heat around the subject at the moment.

I'd be happy to do the moderating on the election/administration blogs. I think 1 central blog will be good until the season finishes and then we can have one for each member that will be running. Once we get this central blog up and running I think we should notify everyone that this is the blog for all comments regarding the coming elections so they don't start crowding up other blogs.

Pretty much. Just making sure that comments stay within the code of conduct. I know elections and the like can be very intense so I'll be a bit more lenient on those blogs in terms of comment deleting and the like. I might employ a warning system. If you make a comment outside the code of conduct I will warn the person first. They do it again their comments go. If it escalates it goes to the 1 Eyed Eel Judiciary and they'll probably end up with a suspension. I'll start a blog outlining these rules once the election blogs are up and running.

why not dump all the election blogs in the social department, that way we dont have to create more sections that clog up the site?

As long as the election blogs don't proliferate into 86 threads, and as long as comments about election matters are kept to election. Blogs and not scattered everywhere as parts of personal tribal wars, they will be easy to ignore. Personally I probably won't read any of them, unless a member of the forum who is running demonstrates maturity and wisdom in their blogging about the election, as opposed to vitriolic silliness.

I have thought about this for the past hour and I am having second thoughts. Do we really need to do this at all? I mean it doesn't do anyone any good. Unless potential candidates running for the board can be subjective and willing to get a bit of a caining on here why bother. Maybe there is a better way. Any thoughts? Tony and mutt man what do you think? What would you like?

I think it's wonderful that some of our One Eyed's are running for election on the board. Unfortunately I don't have voting rights but I value the fact that those of us who take the time to contribute to this forum have the best intentions for our footy club.

I suspect I know who said high profile members are but can you advise us in advance whom of us is running for election?

I'd be more than happy to offer my resources for the sake of the cause.
