How did you become an eels fan?

After reading Phil's great blog (and I'm serious when I wrote that) I got thinking about how I first became an eels fan especially in an Irish family who had no idea about rugby league, never mind hearing of it.I was born in a city that was literally blowing up around me and living in fear each day and having the Brits, mainly the the 1st Para (kents), raiding your house three nights a week (and I am not shitting you either). I was seven when I first arrived on this gorgeous shores of Australia a few days before Tracy hit Darwin (we were there just before Trace hit and still remember the armac sticking to our feet) and also, a side bar, we were in the middle of the Middle eastern war as our plane had to land in Damacus..thats another story for anoither day... and hit the city of Sydney. I didn't really started supporting parra until the '75 grand final. I remember I attended a small Catholic schoopl on the Northen Rivers in a small bush town where Cody Nelson and Iggy were born (hint hint) and climbing the siarcase where I remember seeing a sign saying 'Go Parra.' I aked a friend who's Parra and he said the best team ever. So that's how I became an eels fan cos one paper poster saying go Parra (and no I don't get a hard on each time I see Go Parra). Even when I was in America I was still 90or trying to keep up) a die hard eels fan. How did you, yeah you! Becoome an eels fan.

  • Its my local team, simple as that
    • great answer. simple as that.

  • Thanks Monster.  When my Mum & Dad moved to West Guildford Dad was a St George supporter.  Our local milkman was Bruce Mann.  Bruce told Dad there would be no milk unless he changed to Parra so he converted.  Many years later Bruce's tall blond son started helping his dad with the run.  They always wore their Parra jumpers delivering milk.

    • What a great story, Phil. Getting the old m,an coverted. None of my family follow RL bar me. My very young nephews are following Union cos tgheir father, my nephew in law, is a Kiwi and follows Union but him and I do get into abarter about which sport is btter and he had admitted league more faster and more tougher but still they're thugs...must admit, it's kinda true

  • Monster, ive just realised your calling, seriously i think you should become a writer mate, youve got good expression in your writing and a very creative mind and i mean that as a compliment.

    • Thanks Snake. I have a few stories outn there but mainly I'm focused on film making and Doing okay at it.

  • We were never the toughest team, but I admired the incredible skills of Sterlo, Zip zip, Kenny, the Crow, Guru of that golden era.

Winning in 81 cemented it for me. I thought this team was a winner !

I could never support another team - despite not knowing what would follow 1986.
  • I moved out here in 88 from Ireland aswell i was 4 i remember going fir Canberra at first because they wore green like Ireland.
But soon enough i settled into school and living in the lalor park seven hills area. All my friends were eels fans my dad had adopted them even though he knew nothing about the game. In 93 dad took me and my brothers to parra stadium and I've been hooked ever since. My dad and i still go to as many games as possible were season ticket holders but with me living on the coast with a young family and dad a bit older now we don't get to every game like we used to but we het to enough when we don't we watch them on tv and call each other straight after.
The eels have always ment alot to me and dad and hopefully I'll pass that on to my little bloke.
  • How about you Snake? - how did you become an Eel??
