  • No he didn't. He got driven back nearly every hit up, and scored a try from a terrible error in the in-goal area. He had no line breaks, line break assists or try assists. He wasn't involved in any of the tries bar the one he scored. How was he impressive? People said the same thing last year after we flogged Manly too.
    • He was non existent in that game lol people think because they won the whole team must of been good! I will say Reynolds was outstanding which I hate saying because he is a massive grub...
    • Yeah from my view he didn't do much different to what he did here. His stats are relatively similar to what he was achieving for us and the most notable thing was that his catching has improved but manly's kicking was woeful so we'll have to see if that's actually improved.

He'll still be picked for Origin.

  • That game was won because the bulldogs forwards have some much skill it is not even fair. It had nothing to do with William Stopafarte.
  • A few theories......I reckon he's fired up and motivated to justify the Parra "contract" for his court case, or, he's trying to show Parra what they're missing out on, or it was only round 1 and he's still actually shit. or Dessie just knows how to get he most out of him....or he's trying to be the "other" Hopoate in the headlines for once.

  • He played ok but nothing to rave about, didn't get on the end of any sweeping backline movement or make extra man in attack leading to a try.

  • Hoppa had a number of really strong games for Parramatta. I never thought Hopoate was poor for Parra. He played a solid $250-$300k NRL player. The issue is we were paying him somewhere between twice and three-times that much, which is a salary reserved for players who turn games for you.
Hopoate didn't do anything remarkable, he just had a solid game, which I think is what you should expect out of him. And the Dogs are probably paying him what he's worth.
I will say I thought Hopoate looked stronger. And he needs that because while his footwork is great, he has a good footy IQ, he was short on both pace and strength to take advantage of the uncertainty his footwork created in the defender. He was always going to be better this year, third year back in the NRL. It's really just a matter of how much better is he going to get.
The Dogs won't regret signing him, but what remains to be seen is if he can become one of the game's marquee backs and earn the type of salary he got at Parra again.

    • spot on, he didn't play terrible for us and still displayed probably the best 'footy IQ' in our backline during his time at parra.

However for me he isn't going to make a lot of the better teams first backlines because of a lack of pace equaling lack of strike. These days its not enough to be solid, you have to be solid and have the ability to strike to be considered a strong first grade player.

    • A pretty fair assessment 1Eyed. Putting aside any biased opinion regarding his talent, we should remember that the initial inflated salary situation & the subsequent botched contractural issues were in essence created by the club & Hoppa just took advantage of our ineptness.

    • Spot on
