Eels players have praised the calm half-time approach of coach Brad Arthur for helping them reverse a shocking first 40 minutes of their season in their comeback win over Brisbane.
Players walked into the Suncorp Stadium sheds down 16-0 on Friday night after an error-riddled opening 40 minutes, including fundamental mistakes immediately before each of Brisbane's three tries.
You could forgive them for thinking a dressing-room spray would soon be reverberating around Suncorp Stadium.
But after Arthur's matter-of-fact guidance during the interval, the players turned their fortunes around in fine style in a 24-0 second-half shut-out.
"I think that's one of the best things about it, Brad comes in and addresses the situation, he doesn't come in and go nuts because that's not going to help the situation," five-eighth Dylan Brown said.
Match Highlights: Broncos v Eels
"You want to go into the next half composed and ready to go so he gave us a few messages we needed and to be honest we didn't need much, we knew what we were doing wrong.
"That was probably the best part about it, him saying that, we switched on, knew what we needed to do."
Skipper Clint Gutherson's early fumble attempting to reclaim a short drop-out was quickly compounded by a Nathan Brown error, with David Mead crossing straight after.
Then back-to-back errors from Shaun Lane gifted the Broncos a chance with Coates bagging his first a couple of plays later.
Reagan Campbell-Gillard and Gutherson again spilled the pill before a Maika Sivo error was compounded by a Lane ruck infringement and just seconds later Coates crossed for his second.
"It was disgusting yeah. The first half was the complete opposite of what we were trying to achieve, complete every set," Brown added.
"If you've got the ball this year, it's the new rules, if you've got the ball you're going to win the game."
Brown and Tom Opacic added errors before the break to cap a sorry 40 minutes.

Lol, I don't agree with you Burt but that last line is hilarious.
I do agree that Lane should be dropped though. You can't make that many errors in one half and expect to keep your spot. He should be sent a reminder that he enjoys a position of privilege that has to be continuously earned, it is not a right.
We don't have anyone on overs. The contract spending is one part that the club has done exceptionally well at in the last few years.
Look at the latest drama that Nathan Brown's manager is trying to spin up - we haven't flinched.
A big chunk of his salary is for expected future performances, otherwise known as potential.
once again bert the "professional" comes up with outlandish commentary - massive overs????
as far as lane goes, that is one thing i can agree with., the rest is just the usual crap
Complete dribble!
Lane has terrible hands, how manyshort balls has he dropped when Brown has done the work and is putting him through a hole, bring on Cartright I say.
As for BA,well there has been a lot of heat on here lately and we won Friday, we had a good year last year and had it not been for injury and suspension we may have progressed, and that is not on BA.I say STFU about it guys ,and just enjoy the show. What BA does or doesn't do won't make this team better. We have a good squad this year and IMO it is now up to the players to deliver,100% effort, hold on to the fckn ball and play smart, patient footy. This is what BA drums into them week after week, compete, complete, earn the right to attack.
After years of shit ,spoon after spoon,BA has got us competitive again, consistently, give the bloke a break. The teams that have won premierships in the last few years ,Storm and Roosters, shit hot rosters cheats,Sharks-cheated,Rabbits-Burgess,Inglis,cheated.Cowboys-Thurston,JT, Matt Scott, once in a lifetime players. We compete because BA has built a good roster without the luxury of Billion dollar owners paying under the table for the best players. It is a good honest ,tough ,exciting football team.Rant over.Enjoy the year,I have a feeling something is going to click and all y 'all are going to have to eat some pie.
He was coach during the time we were penalised for it. The time we got cought for was for when sticky was coach. BA had nothing to do with it. But I believe he was the best person to get us through it
Failure or success is a by-product of expectation. Yes, in a competition one should be aiming to win, but it's not always that simple. Take the Dragons as an example. Most have them pegged for the wooden spoon. If they don't win the comp, using your logic they have failed plain and simple. As an organisation, they might be looking at their team and be thinking anything better than bottom 4 is a success for the season. None of that helps their fans, but realistic expectations have to be applied to everything in life, including sport.
I'm not trying to beat you down. I too have high expectations, and want us to win.
But on the one hand you say: "I understand a lot of fans have different views of what a “successful” season is. I get that." Then on the other hand you say: "Just another example of brissy, the unicorns and their mediocrity mindset. If you don’t win the comp, you failed. Simple. It’s not rocket science honestly lmao."
To me that second one doesn't come across at all as being understanding of others expectations. Just saying...
We use too much juice just getting to the finals. By the time we get there we are spent. Others have mentioned that we don’t play smart. Last week was yet another perfect example of just crawling over the line at the death (against the spooners) to get the win.
So many complaints about this player and that player how ordinary their performances are. There’s one common link - the coach.
I agree with Rappetite completely, I can’t see us being considered anything remotely close to contenders this year. At least we only have to wait 2 more days to find out.
