Holden Cup: Rd.22 vs Penrith Panthers

Still waiting for a final team list to be punished but it is another glorious Sunday afternoon at Ringrose Park.

Can't see any changes in the team from the warm up but it would be nice to have confirmation.

  • Very tough fixture coming today for our boys. Penrith are the form team of the competition.

  • Parramatta kicking off today, running towards the clubhouse.

Good tackle from Twal and Aloiai first up, driving the Penrith runner backwards.

The visitors quickly attack our right edge before centreing the ball for a kick which French takes on the first bounce.

  • Abbas Miski leaves a defender on the ground and draws the first penalty of the day. The Penrith player is in some discomfort and the trainer attends to him. Not sure if it is his knee or hip that is causing him strife  but he is struggling.

  • He is cradled off over the shoulders of two trainers as play resumes with the Eels finding touch 7m short of halfway.

Aloiai steams in for the tap hit up. Oloapu follows with a good carry but on the next play but Tom Amone's short pass at the line is off target and gets scooped up by the Panthers.

Amone goes a little way towards redemption with a bell ringer of shot but Penrith make the most of the unexpected possession by getting to the last tackle and sending a bomb towards the posts. Think it is fullback vs fullback here in the contest and Bevan just about gets the ball plucked from his mits as they both go up for it and Penrith end up scoring under the posts.

    The conversion is successful.

  • Madness from the kickoff!

Penrith let the ball bounce and it takes a wicked turn to the deadball line. They barely get there in time and are then driven into touch for all money but the touchy doesn't raise his flag! The ball is then offloaded and Penrith survive on their 1m line before getting a penalty for offside defenders. Bullshit!

Penrith end up rucking it out and bombing French once again, who takes the ball easily this time around before the Eels get their second penalty of the game.

  • Solid carry from Raeli before we attack down the left looking for French but he is pulled down by a good tackle. Oloapu takes a crash ball down the same edge before Dylan Izzard rolls it dead in goals. Way too much power on that grubber.

Seven tackle set for Penrith and on the back of a lot of second phase ball the Panthers get into our red zone before a great tackle by Twal on their fullback forces the ball loose and ends a particularly long run of play.

Excellent carry from Amone takes us into the Panther's half on the last where ZDC bombs it. A good kick chase pins Penrith on their 10m line. Better set from Parra.

  • Sort of a half chance for Penrith maybe? They spread it wide down their right early in the set but their centre drops the offload but somehow toes it ahead. Oloapua is awake to the play on call and shepherds the ball into touch.

Parra pick up a penalty straight away from the scrum as Fairouz Elkander is held down for far too long in the first tackle. Time comes off as another Panther hits the deck. Looks like an issue with his right knee.

  • Fuimaono taps it and goes from the restart of play. Twal strides back in field on the second and is followed by a left edge spread to Josh Aloiai who drives his legs to the line before he is brought down.

We tip it on from Amone to Twal next under the posts before Grant has a fart from dummy half which brings up the last where Zach's grubber is too heavy. Failing to build pressure on our kicks at the moment.

  • Josh Grant has been left behind after tackling a big unit and is coming off with for a concussion test. Penrith exploit the man advantage by raiding our left edge but we scramble well and Penrith are deadset allowed to pass from the ground! The crowd bays out their displeasure and the Eels then concede a penalty in the ruck.

WE hold out in the following set but are pinned in goals on the last with a grubber. Penrith with the momentum now.

  • Holy crap! What a tackle from Dockar-Clay! Gafa is beaten on the wing from a cutout pass and ZDC somehow gets across in cover to save a certain try!

Two tackles later French is perfectly positioned to clean up the grubber and get into the field of play.

Msiki and Elkander get into the middle for useful carries but Clay's clearance kick from his 40m mark finds the fullback on the full.

The Panther continue to offload with great frequency and it half opens up our left edge in this set but the scrambling effort continues to be good enough before Zach Dockar-Clay cleans up the bat down from the Panthers kick on the last.

Simple set from Parra as they work the ruck coming out of their red zone before we finally get a good kick away on the last that finds the ground inside the Penrith 20m zone. A good kick chase follows.

Alas Penrith find space down our right edge with quick hands with a half break. Parra recover and Penrith roll the ball in behind our left on the last where French is again on hand to clean up.

Some great work from Abbas Miski, Dylan Izzard and Jeff Markus working the ball over halfway is all undone on the last where Dockar-Clay's terrible kick cops a deflection that sees the ball fly behind ZDC. The Panther who deflected it pushes through regathers it and offloads to his #6 that races off to the line.

    That one hurts.

    The conversion is good.

    Penrith lead 12-0
