Holden Cup: Rd.2 vs Canterbury Bulldogs

Sorry boys (and girls) that was an unmitigated disaster. Got to the game 10mins before kickoff but got to my seat (upper concourse) 10min before half time. Stadium staff were hopeless.

Abbas Miski bombs a try as I type that as he loses control of the pill in the left corner trying to beat the fullback. The Dogs quickly turn the ball over and from the following set the Eels nearly score again on the last as Oloapu I believe, knocks the ball on in the fierce contest for Dockar-Clay's grubber.

  • Another error from the Dogs, this time it may have cost them a try. They make a break via the left edge winger from a line ball pass but with Davis closing in on the winger he has to pass inside and the ball is spilled.

The Eels pick up a penalty on the way out of their half.

  • The Eels try some outside/inside ball play in the pack on the Canterbury goal line but the ball eventually comes loose in a tackle.

Canterbury scrum, 10m off their goal line with 3min left in the half.

  • Good read and tackle from Abbas Miski there as the shuts down the sweeping movement from the Dogs.

A moment of madness there from Pene! The Dogs kick was sailing close to the sideline on the full and I'm not sure if it was from inside the 40m...despite that he flies across the field to take it on the full only to slide into touch.

And from the scrum feed the Dogs earn their opening try with a backline move similar to the one that Miski just prevented.

No idea what Pene was thinking there unless it was a genuine 40/20 attempt.

John Fomai was the try scorer there.

    The conversion is unsuccessful.

    Half Time

    Parra 18 lead Canterbury 4

  • Tui Oloapu, Zach Dockar-Clay, Aaron Pene and Bevan French the try scorers in the half.

From the limited minutes I saw both Bevan French and Alex Twal were playing very well.

  • Dogs out first for the second half. Parra will be kicking off.

  • Davis gets play started with the kick off. The Dogs quickly work the ball from their right edge to the left before coming back to the centre for the kick. Guy Hamilton fishes for a 40/20 but Davis is well placed to retrieve the ball.

Parra focus on rucking it out in their first set of the half and draw a penalty for some very lazy ruck work. They find touch 25m out from the Canterbury goal line but lose the ball on the first carry. Ordinary stuff it must be said.

  • Clay is bumped off there but the defence converges to help him out. The Dogs find space down our right edge afterwards and pinch 20 metres before they too come up with an error two tackles later.

  • Nice ball from French down the left edge but Smith grasses it. Might have been a chance for Miski there is Smith held onto it.

Canterbury scrum 15m off their goal line.

  • Another error from the Dogs as the ball they turn on back on the inside finds the carpet. Parra will pack in for a scrum feed just inside the opposition half.

Oh dear, they too come up with another error. That was on the first receiver, maybe Smith again?

  • The Dogs venture down the right edge of the Eels but we mark up well and trap the winger without giving away an advantage. The Dogs swing back to their right for the last and Abbas Miski earns a penalty when he cops a knock going up to contest the ball.

Haha, I think the captain for the Dogs wanted words with there but even up in the concourse I could hear the ref dismiss him.

Good run from Raeli midway through the set but the ref finds an error in the play the ball. Izzard was shaping up for a dangerous dart there as well. Raeli is miffed at the call but we will have a scrum none the less.

"I really like Samrani but if JR decides to give him up for MB I think that is a massive mistake.
IMO Samrani should be 1st drop for either centre/ wing if one of our starters is out. Brian Kelly is bog average and not going to get better.

"So u boys reckon he was signed for depth? I was hoping we'd see him combine with Fox on the left, but Ryles knows more. Samrani has the jump on him? we have too sit and watch tomorrow night. Stressing "
