help/advice

This is not really an eels blog as such but I am reaching out to some where posting in the past week regarding Chromecast and signing up for Kayo, I would like to cover needed bases in getting it right.

I purchased a Google Chrome set today, got home to install it and spent quite some time in getting it working, my wife is concerned in seeing the number of sites that came up, especially after the mamoth time in getting stuff through her mobile phone, she has a concern that all these new programs, such as NetFlix, Stan, and seemingly countless others, didn't help when I spoke of signing up for Kayo.

So with Chromcast installed and getting some items showing and ok, the questions are do any of those installed apps and programs have to be paid for as far as watching them through Chromecast?

The main one though for me is Kayo, during the recent discussions one of the members posted a note that he was a member of the eels and only had to pay $5.00 a month to watch via Kayo, whereas the majority were saying its $25.00 a month, which can be cancelled at any time?    So is there any such plan that provides for only a $5.00 per month option?

Thanks for any help.

  • Wish you luck Colin---a big challenge mate dabbling with technology.. The worst thing is spending hours to get this stuff working and when you have a problem and you need to rest it you have to go back to the drawing board again. I will watch  what comes out of your blog with interest

    • I sat down & went to open 9now, then I get messages to open apps and to register, along with something else.  Now the Google Chromecast is all neatly packed back into its box, will head to JB on Monday and get a refund, after hours yesterday setting it up and every effort had me screaming as the need to load apps, and passwords and all the rest.

Will put the refund money towards a Smart TV as I think its the smart thing to do. Sheesh to the modern world of cyber PHHT

  • Chromecast is basically a device that makes an older model tv a smart tv i.e. it'll allow you to use apps such as Netflix, Stan and so on.

You'll still need a good internet connection and yes You'll need to pay for the streaming services.

No one pays for all these services unless they are rich. So be smart with a mate or family member i.e. you pay for Netflix and your neighbour pays for Kayo and you share your passwords.

    Good luck bud.

  • Col, happy to help here mate.

Any app that is streaming anything decent will need a paid account. Netflix, stan, amazon prime, kayo...all pay as you go services. Some you might be able to sign up to for a free trial, but be wary, they will need a credit card on sign up, so if you forget to cancel after the free trial you will get charged.

On to Kayo. Standard rate for the basic service is $25 per month. I got it for $15 per month through telstra for 12 months as I have my mobile with them. Note that this offer is still available. Recently, as per the blog you mentioned, I managed to get it changed to $5 per month as I was an NRL.com member and there was an offer available as their free pass service is ending. If you can get it for $5 per month, great, $15 is good too. Look around for offers that are available.

Out of curiosity, did you get a chromecast with google tv or just the standard chromecast device? If you are unsure, check what colour it is. Black = chromecast, white or light blue = chromecast with tv. I can explain the difference if you like.

    • Probably worth mentioning too that you will need wifi/ethernet connection for internet access, and if you have the standard chromecast device you will also need a smartphone or tablet to cast to it.

    • Thanks all, will be in bed shortly,  I am not worried about such items as Netflix, Stan and the others, I notice Youtube is on the list but if I have to pay, no way as I can get if via my main computer

I purchased the $99.00 model which is in White colour, was a bit more expensive that the single doggle version, and the remote makes it a bit easier after you get used to it.

The primary aspect though is that I only really interested in extra TV that is free, although happy enough to pay for RL games if price is right. I believe that Channel Nine broadcasts are free and will work through the Chromecast set up as its free to air anyway.

Thanks Meelk will be back online in the morning.

      • what a wonderful response from you guys

      • Ok yep, thats the Chromecast with TV. This means you dont need to cast if you don't want, it is essentially a mini smart device that can have apps installed, and accounts stored. So as an example you can install the kayo app, sign in with an account, and watch sport til your eyes bleed.

Or you can still cast from a smartphone if you want.

I note you mentioned youtube. Some services, like youtube, dont need a paid account, you will just get advertising, much like on a pc.

      • You don't need to pay for YouTube on Chromecast.

    • One question re Kayo, as I note you are a member of NRL.com, I have been with that site now for several years, but have not seen anything regarding membership as such, I have passwords and the like to open their online site with details etc with them, would imagine though that its likely a different membership though.
