heading into the bye period and towards June 30

having seen the past few games a few things have been picked up by many fans, regarding the make up of the team. Before the june 30 deadline, if parramtta potentially sign willis meehan, and he makes his way into the starting side, BA will have some tough calls to make. Based on the last two games i have brought together a team of players which i believe deserve their spots through both attitude and performance (barring meehan). I believe this is a side that could potentially go as far up as 5th into the ladder. This would be the team that i would like to see run out after june 30. This is unlikely to happen but is the best combination of players at our disposal.

1. french

2. semi

3. Guthenson

4. jennings

5. hoffman

6. Norman (c)

7. moses

8. Meehan/Vave

9. Kaysa

10. Alvaro

11. Mau

12. Tep

13. Brown

14. Edwards

15. Vave/Meehan

16. scott (VC)

17. Taka/smith

A few things to mention:

  • Guthenson to centre: his next best position as bevan is our long term fullback and will get better as his combinations develop.
  • Meehan/ Vave starting: i believe at least one of these props is needed to start as their impact at the start of the games are crucial which can be seen with vave tonight.
  • Alvaro starting: I believe Alvaro deserves a starting spot week in week out. this kid is a work horse and in my opinion offers much more to the team than mannah.
  • Taka/smith: Not sure who to put here and was hoping to get the opinion of others. Not sure what other people think but i believe both these players deserve a bench spot.
  • The absence of matagai and Mannah: both very unlikely to be dropped but i believe if the willis Meehan signing is successful and he happens to find form along with a rise in alvaros form i really cant find a reason or spot to include timmy and matagi in the side.

Keen to hear the opinions of others

  • Meehans only ever played 1 first grade game correct me if im wrong, id be guessing its going to take a long time to get him ready but he is a massive unit, if hes in good shape he might very well get a go at some point.

  • Not sure 100% if Meehan is actually coming to the Eels. If he does he would have to get match fitness first and probably have his attitude worked on as well. This would possibly mean he my not even get a start until sometime in 2018, if it happens at all. Together with size you also need, footy brains and skills.
  • Size means nothing. Les Davidson was under 90kg when he started and played at 95kg. Was one of the toughest forwards ever to play the game. I think if Kenny Edwards keeps up with the theatrics and keeps giving away stupid penalties at crucial times, plus his ability to make mistake on mistake I can't see him staying in the team. Same to a lesser degree of Taka and matagi.
  • Mannah had 9 runs for 96 metres (which is over 10 metres a run) and 32 tackles and rarely misses. That's pretty good stats in 40 or so mins of footy!!

Yes he aren't a superstar but he does his job!! He isn't going to get dropped!!
    • Most of those metres were off kick returns, and honestly Alvaro has shown he is capable of starting.  Mannah will be lucky to hold his spot when everyone is fit.  Him and Matagi were defiantly our week links last night.

  • I thought it was a great team effort last night. Some players played their best games so far. All the forwards played well except to me Vave seemed unfit and lazy and I would like to see Edwards take a leaf out of Moeroa.s book and straighten his game and leave the side ways stuff out of his game as he is a big unit has skill and the silly penalties need to leave his game. As for the backs I thought all played well except French who seems to be struggling with confidence since his injury. But all in all a lot better team performance and hopefully we will get to see more of it. A few headaches for BA when Norman, Brown and Jennings return.

  • If Alvaro could get an offload into his game he would be the complete frontrower.

  • So your saying Kenny was better then both of them?

  • Having your sets start with our biggest boy vave then Alvaro and semi gave us some room to allow Moses and gutho to explore . Matagi is a great player for the 20 min mark and same for mannah. Games are being decided mentally and on score board in first 20 minutes . Use too much petrol early you will fall away at back end.
