Hayne Wasted

I made the long trip up to Newcastle to watch the game live, and came away with the opinion that Hayne is being wasted in the centres. Not only was he visible good when he got the ball, but his behind the scenes efforts were awesome as well, always getting back in defence, always calling players into position, calling for the ball when opposition caught short, moving players into better positions. When Norman and Moses didn't have the answers you could see him attempting to get their attention, a lot of the time to no avail. Now I like Gutho, but he had nothing of any importance to change the match or set someone up. Hayne needs to be moved to fullback and put gutho in the centre.

  • Hayne's main problem is is he fit enough to play at the back anymore????  Maybe not for 80mins but surely in attack they can find ways to inject hm into the game a bit more tham having him wasted on an edge???

    • Now Norman can be very good when he puts his mind to it and the team first, what I saw especially in the second half Norman run the ball himself, and get tackled instead of giving early ball to Hayne who was on the outside of his man a couple of times, I also saw Norman kick a few times away from Hayne, and another time Hayne called for a kick on the try line and Norman waited too long and kicked it into the hands of a Newcastle defender. I guess what I'm getting at is that Hayne at Fullback gets to chime in on both sides and also can command earlier ball in the centre of the park and create opportunities for his outside men. Norman and Moses just wern,t seeing it as well as Hayne was against Newcastle and Gutho just couldn't create anything. I think Gutho is better, backing up with enthusiasm, running consistent lines, brings lots of energy but as a playmaker and seeing the bigger picture a cross the park, he isn't exceptional,on the other hand watching it live Hayne appeared to be outstanding on Friday night. I think Hayne has the ability at Fullback to set up players such as Gutho in the centres etc I don't think Gutho has the ability to set up say Hayne for a try.

  • Fullback or 5/8 is where he would be best suited for the Eels. At center he just doesn't see enough of the ball.

  • Agree! Number 1 is his best position! But B.A. knows what he’s doing of course!

  • Fullback for me Hayne by far better positioned then gutho n French n way better defender on line n when attack r 20 out
  • That's a fair point Don, but honestly I was sitting a couple of rows in on the 30m line in attack Second half and I could see and hear some of the calls from Hayne and Norman was closer to him then I was, also I saw Hayne approach Norman a few times behind the scenes and appear to be trying to set a play up. Now Of course it's hard to get the play right and luck of the draw such as kicking into the arms of Newcastle player, but it happens and that's my point. Hayne is Only allowed to be as good as Norman allows him to be be with early ball, better kicks etc etc, that's why I think Hayne at Fullback gets more say, more early ball to create for others as well as himself and he can pop up on both sides. And link th Moses as well, It's not having a go at Norman just for the sake of it, just starting the facts as I saw it, and the belief that Hayne serves the team better at fullback, and Gutho in the centre.
    • I was there Friday night too. Norman played with heart in the second half but not with his head. Hayne and Jennings were bored with the lack of ball they got, great when they got the ball.
Hayne to fullback for the rest of the season. Gutho to hooker.Taka to centre.

      • Gutho to hooker / dummy half probably worth a try, Would nearly certainly be better then our current two hookers. Might be different when Maloney gets back though. I think Taka's days as a centre are over though.

  • Put him at the back and make him sole captain.
