Hayne to start as fullback for All Stars

NRL All Stars fullback Billy Slater has today withdrawn from Saturday’s Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars game at Skilled Park because of an ankle injury.

NRL All Stars coach Wayne Bennett today called Slater’s Melbourne team-mate Brett Finch into the squad on the bench.

Billy had injured his ankle at the team’s first training session on Monday and, despite some promising signs during treatment this week, it was decided today that he would not be in a position to play in the match at 6.30pm AEST (7.30pm AEDT) on Saturday evening.

How does Brett Finch make an 'All Stars' team?

If it were an 'All Solid First Graders' then maybe.

You need to realise that the Storm also had 2 'shoe in' players. The captain and vice captain of both Aus and NZ were automatic picks (really not sure why, probably so Melbourne could have more than 1 player in it). Plus, Inglis was a no brainer for the Indigenous team. Finch at best would have been Melbourne's 5th highest vote getter. Still, I'm not sure how he even polled that highly. I wonder if any other side's #5 player made it into the game.

No clue how Finch made it into this team, but it's great news to see Hayne taking fullback. It's pretty much where he belongs... he shouldn't be playing second fiddle to Slater.
