Gutho for Captain

Rugby League is a game won by inspired teams led by inspirational men. Our Co-Captians (and there’s an issue right there) of forwards Mannah and Scott are not the men for the job. They are good solid journeymen, I’m sure Tim is great at going to visit kids in hospital and being a good community ambassador but the Captain is the boss of the football side when on the park, not the face of choice for the bureaucrats to wheel out at publicity events.At another level the Captain has to have the authority to speak to the referees, whether for genuine appeals on bad calls or as a strategic play for a bit of time.The refs have to like you at some level to get away with that and respect is a big part of that. They tolerate Tim and seems they just don’t like Scott and blow him off easily.So then as Captain coming back to the team to give them a rev up or give them the next set of orders how likely are the teammates to be influenced by the Captain who has no clout with the ref on his teammates behalf. We can see clearly, none.Finally but most importantly a Captain must inspire his team by his own performance, (a Captain’s knock, run, pick etc) he puts in double and lifts his team to a win. He puts on the hits and the forwards step up, he goes for a run and the backs run harder .. He grabs the ball and creates a try out of nothing against the tide of momentum and then expects his teammates to step up and go with him. For a true Captain they always will.Based on what I saw yesterday from Gutho’s first run he was stoked to be back and spewing to be out there with a pack of losers who have the ability to at least try as hard as he does and some of them with as much or more skill. There were moments when a few went with him and we looked ok but when we failed it was often Gutho giving them a spray and looking ever more pissed off as the day went on.If he was given the job of Captain I believe it would be one of the changes that we need to stop losing. He is renowned as the best trainer and fittest player we have (injury aside) He has given his guts for us since the day he turned up. I’d be surprised if he didn’t insist on coming back early as he got sick of seeing us get beaten without him being out there and able to do something about it.He has a great story and following among the fans, so would likely be someone the refs would respect and he has a good football brain which we are light on across the team.He is only one week back from injury and needs to make sure he is fully fit but he is also an 80 minute player who can be the boss on field from start to finish, the one man responsible and have a Vice-Captain in case he is off for some reason.We might as well start building for 2019 Return to Parra Year now and we might be a chance of being competitive when we get to play at Cumberland v3.0.Gutho for Captain, then let him pick the blokes he wants to play with and I see us winning more than losing even this year.Is there someone else who should get the job or is Clint Gutherson (C) the future of Parra ?

  Cheers Carlo, long time lurker, first blog, I’ve liked Gutho since his first game and his weird worm action and he has just got better every week. Love the Guth ! He’s the leader of the next generation winning team, the old guard has gotta go. Some of our guys are still getting by on the GF win in Harold Matt’s in 2004 !! Looking at you Hayne, Mannah, T-Rex ..

Nathan Brown as others have suggested is the only other player who plays like a captain.

I'd go with Gutho as captain as he plays 80 mins then, Brown as the assistant if he is ever needed, rather than doing a co-captain thing.

but it shows how much of a joke everyone else is when a bloke like Gutho who hasn't played a game since 23rd July 2017 comes in and is automatically the best player in the team

the other 16 players are a disgrace to let that happen.

No brainer. If BA does not make Gutherson C this week we may as well all follow the cricket (wait a minute......). At the moment our team does not have "The Right Stuff". In fact only Gutherson, Brown and Moses have it. The entire pack needs to be rebuilt. No more The Polar Bear but now The Pole Dancer such is the amount of weight Alvaro has lost. The back four needs to be Gutherson, Hayne, Takarangi, Jennings, French. I would sell Norman tomorrow morning at 9am. Moses half and only Brown is worth his salt so pick anyone else you like in the forwards. Gutherson must be Captain and if we need a co captain it must be a talker, so Moses.
