Gutho as Captain???

Gutho is a very well liked player,  by fans,  players and coach. I certainly like him too.

But I query the decision to make him captain.

I have always felt the Parra fans over value his ability. He is good and versatile, but I don't accept he was a genuine chance to wear the 1 for NSW, and he is no chance (at this stage of his career) of making it wearing 6. I think Tedesco, Tommy T, Moylan and potentially Dugan would all wear the 1 for NSW before him.

His experience is minimal too. I don't know how many games he has played,  but it wouldn't be many. He is still young and has been plagued by injury so far.

To me, he doesn't seem comfortable talking to the media in the post game conferences and he doesn't appear to be hugely vocal on field. I'm sure he will get better at both,  both I wouldn't say he is a natural.

All of the above is offset by the fact we probably don't have a better candidate at the moment. I would have nominated Norman a while a go, but he clearly has not learnt to mature and may not even remain at the club for long. The only other person I might prefer is Jennings, but he would only he a caretaker.

Mannah had to go. He was far too passive.

Does anyone else query the decision or is everyone happy?

  • What Phil blocked everyone who has opinion about Frankie post ???? Clint is not a HOOKER
    • Anyone who doesn't agree that Clint Gutherson is the next Cameron Smith will be banned until they can see sense.

      • I was another member who thought we should give him a run at 9. I don't agree so much with my former self, but he is the sort of player who would be good anywhere and we desperately needed a 9 at the time.

  • My god we’re a hard mob to please. 1st everyone wanted to punt mannah because he lacked leadership. Well now we go Gutho and he’s still not good enough.
    • Hold on, nobody knows what sort of capt guth will make, guths got a lot to prove, he might be the man he might not be but just because tim was dropped doesnt mean guth will work out.

    • Mate,  I'm not saying he is not good enough and he is one of the best candidates we have. I'm just not convinced yet that he is the right man for the job right now. I hope in time he changes my mind

  • He is good winger, who was the last winger that was a good captain ??
    • He's a bloody awful winger. Do you remember his games for us, as a winger?

  • I too am puzzled by the decision to make Gutherson captain. I don't expect that many would agree with me, but my opinion of him is that he is 100% energy and 10% skill. He is by no means great player and IMO he never will be. I think he would struggle to make it into the top seventeen of at least ten of the other clubs. As for his leadership credentials, he has none.

Everything he does seems to be ad-lib.

Unfortunately though, as I see it we are currently, and have been since the retirement of Nathan Cayless without any genuine leaders. Gutherson right now is popular among the fans and so making him captain did please many on here.

For me, Takarangi would have been the best of this bad bunch.

  • I HATE fullbacks as captain. If Gutho is a fullback and don't want him to be captain.

What I find astounding about Gutherson is the level of respect he gets. It's literally like nothing I've seen before. Have a look at the interview with Salmon on the club's site. For a guy, who as you say is relatively inexperienced, he's just universally admired and respected. That's a pretty good start as a captain.

I've been watching since he's been in the role. He talks to the referees, and I reckon if he was in the line he'd be the type of captain who would always be in the refs ear - and he's likable so he'd probably be able to get away with it.

If Gutho is a long-term fullback, I'd have said Nathan Brown was the next most likely, but I'd seriously be looking to recruit a big name with the lure of the captaincy as well.
