I'm not sure why a lot of so called experts and podcasts are saying that Gutho had a bad game in Origin 1. It made me take a look at his stats for the game.
Run meters 124
Post contact Meyer 42
Line break assists 3
Try assists 2
Tackle breaks 2
Tackles made 32
Missed tackles only 2
Tackle efficiency 91.4%
His biggest flaw of the night was 2 handling errors. That's not bad for a center in an Origin match. Which there were a few players that had 2 handling errors. Whighton made 10 tackles and missed 7. Yet for some reason people don't rate Gutho and tend to blame him for the loss.
Gotho has been in the top 5 for Dally M the last couple of years and probably should have won it this year. That shows the guy can play

I don't recall anyone saying he had a bad game, just that he was playing out of position.
It's been implied he had a bad game because:
Even the SMH ratings scored both Wighton and Gutho a 4/10 from memory.
The reality is he played a very good game, the stats show that. He linked up well with JAC and they were defensively solid, albeit not perfect.
If we won, he would have been lauded. But we lost, so he was one of many scapegoats.
I love the fact that people underestimate Gutho, the more his talent can fly under the radar, the better. I'm quite sure he listens to coaching staff more than armchair media pundits, and by the numbers he's one of the best in the league.
Origin Gagai is a beast though.
Doesn't help whatever club he plays for
I thought the same thing. I'm a big queensland supporter and I thought Gutho was great. He is made for origin. I wish queensland had someone that fit, competitive, skilful.
I thought Gutho was pretty dynamic. He and Ado Carr looked really dangerous. Gutho may not be a speed machine but he gets into top gear quickly which is just as dangerous at centre.
I was never an advocate of moving him to centre but I reckon if he was paired up with Sivo it would be an absolute try fest.
Sivo is useless at the moment. Needs to find his form.
One paper wrote Gutho is a great club player but just wasn’t a state or origin level player. Thought he played well in a pretty ordinary team myself. Gutho makes players around him better.
He was very active the whole game and probably tried too hard in some instances. His defence was good but one defensive error led to a maroons try. Im not sure about him playing centre but not many other spots for him and Im not on the selection panel. I think its safer to put players in their best positions especially in big games. I think he will go better in game 2. I think however the final result of the series is already determined.
Whilst he statistically looked pretty good the fact is Queensland targeted him because they believed he would eventually crack, and crack he did. So they were unfortunately proven correct. I say targeted based purely on his tackle count. Clearly Bennett saw something on that edge as opposed to the other edge.
Obviously Fittler is smart enough to know Gutherson is a good player and one major missed tackle doesn't change that. Hopefully Gutherson has a blinder and forces all naysayers to shut up.
