Gutherson is not the answer (Yet....)

He doesn't have the creativity to play 6. Who knows maybe with a bit of training he may become an ok 6, but not full time. Honestly (excuse the profile pic) French is my choice for 1 over Gutherson. Leaving centre and wing for him to play.

Gutherson is a valuable player to have due to his versatility. Playing every position in the backline, as well giving his all every 80mins adds value even to a struggling line-up. Although I see any real insane talent that leads to people saying that's why he is the real deal. With French its his composure, quickness, competitiveness that makes him a threat. Gutherson isn't very fast, can struggle under pressure and is competitive however.

My opinion Norman will stay, and Robson will partner him. We can win a comp with those halves. Robson is not the problem, neither is Gutherson. Neither has great creativity or a good kicking game. They were thrown into this situation with staff saying "Off you go". But even with this situation, Gutherson shows that he is a good stop gap at best. Robson is also a stop gap, however he is a better half than Gutherson, well at least for now.

Not saying he will never play good at 6, he may need time. But with this line-up I think we will win more games with Robson than Gutherson. Happy to be proven wrong but that's what I think

  • Gutherson is a natural footballer, with more games he could be an outstanding 6. But with Corey Norman at 6 the question is, are we looking for a 6 or 7? Gutherson has only played a handful of games, I thought he would struggle with the tackling but the other night he was very good and tough. BA will now use the rest of the season to work out what talent he wants for next year. We have money to spend, and I think he wants to hit the ground running, not spend a year rebuilding. Personally I don't think we need to much, my main worry 9. Peats had a blinder Sat evening & I think that's what we needed, such a shame we lost him. Gutherson will be in first grade next year and depending on the balance of the side, will depend where BA plays him. Injuries haven't helped!
  • Had to laugh when some were hailing him the new Brett Kenny. ..BA knows hes a great footballer that can conceivably play a few backline positions but hes a fullback/winger always has been , always will be.
    Its time to experiment.
I reckon anyone who is left in the top 25 will get a run for the rest of the year. John Falou will be the first.
I would be asking the NRL for some dispensation to play some young kids like dargan just to see how they go.
Everything is geared towards next year.
    • I disagree I believe his best position is in the centres. He's strong defensively , works well with his inside and outside men coordinating defence, a great hole runner who has a great ability to poke his nose through the opposition defences, has the ability to set his outside men up both with the creating of overlaps and the pass. If he works on his offload and improves his power this bloke could be anything. He has footy nous which is sadly lacking in most modern league players. Playing him at fullback negates the defensive qualities he brings outwide and with the battering ram work required from the back three which he isn't suited stifles his attacking potency.
    • You mount a strong argument Bup. I think we can both agree that in time he can be a very good footballer!
    • I also keep referring to the work a player does off the ball. Some like Falou and even young Tyrell who we are losing to the rabbits, sit back and watch the play. Players like Billy Slater and tedesco follow the play looking for crumbs, looking for half breaks. Next time anyone is at a game try just concentrating on one player , watch young Bevan French follow the play, anticipating the next chance. Young Clint does exactly this and this is what separates the Guthersons from the Falous. The work off the ball, setting up the next play..this is the player you want. Punt all players that sit around waiting for others to do the hard work.
  • I'd be more than happy to have Gutho at fullback though. Him chiming in on plays would be great if we can keep Normz too. Bev on the wing for another year
  • Gutho won't be the starting 6 in 2017 unless we lose everyone and gain no-one. But he has played better at 6 than most expected. Maybe BA will play Gutho at 6 for the rest of 2016 purely to build up his utility value? With 8 games more experience at 6 that would mean Gutho is capable of filling in anywhere in the back line bar 7
  • He's only set up about 4 tries so far in 2 games and scored some himself? How many did our 1.2 million dollar player create this year? Stuff all
