Gus is on 100% footy explaining how the cap works, though the value part is fascinating i do not think the man who has three players signed not registered due to the fact they need to release three players in order to be cap compliant with two of those players starting and are important pieces added you let go your fullback to accomodate the rest, so you have a great 6 & 9, halfway to a wonderful team with top 5 of your top earners, none are in the spine. He mentions all the money on the cap should be put towards your top 20 that is how you compete for a premiership, like he is doing now at Canterbury. What about injuries Gus? Only leaves you room to have 1-2 major injuries? If you have 20 wonderful players and 10 fringe to average players that is not a well balanced squad, instead what is better is to have 14-15 wonderful players, 7-8 good players, 4-5 average/rookies. It is great on paper, but injuries happen. If he wants that process to work, he needs a better 1 & 7, he does not have it, look at Penrith and Melbourne and even us, we lose alot of players as long as our spine is in tact we will win majority of the games, Canterbury have 1 great spine player and are sitting 2-7, their roster is not bad either, the spine is not there and wont be there due to him buying Kikau when he did not need him. It was arrogance, not even registered too, i will laugh if Kikau is not in blue and white in 2023.
He says it has been proven time and time again you need value in your cap to succeed. Yeah Gus, it has also been proven time and time again you need a spine to succeed also, not just 1/4 or 2/4, but 3/4 or 4/4 of spine players being top quality to succeed. What an idiot.
What a way to work the salary cap Gus, masterful.

Added it says TPJ is on 925k, talk from Bulldogs fans was he was on 750k, so unless TPA's are included which it shouldn't be when discussing the cap as TPA's aren't included on the cap, then Canterbury are paying the players what is said they are paying them, maybe more. So how the hell do they get Kikau, Mahoney and Sutton added with extending King for double the money, yes they have players off-contract but the figure brought up where they had only 500k to spend did not include the off-contract players.
Great post LB
It was interesting to see we only have Moses in the top 5 (5th place) and no other player in the top 5 in any other position where teams like Penrith and Melbourne have 3 or 4 players in the top 5.
Gus by his own words can not possibly fit all these players into his cap as he admits he will have to pay overs to get these players to his club.
He admits paying them to their value, he is paying to their value but doing too much. He says get quality, but he is doing it in the wrong positions. It is a proven clubs with a top spine are the best in the NRL.
A great example of this is the titans. They have all their money locked into overpaid forwards with a very average spine. Then, they are puzzled as to why they cant get fifita into the game
100% Fiddy
Their spine is young and to be honest garbage except AJ Brimson but he is easily contains as he is the only threat
Sexton can not put a bomb up for shit.
Every one that he puts up goes straight up and down. He never puts it anywhere near a metre out from the goal line.
The best thing that could happen for the Titans and Fifita is if Wayne takes him to the Dolphins and concentrate on improving their spine which I think they are trying to do by getting Foran
Well Manly you can say are struggling a little as they only have DCE and turbo in their spine.
Foran is there but on cheap and is leaving for cash and due to Schuster but they'll have an issue once schuster wants an upgrade
Gus is right you are wrong, the storm are the perfect example of what Gus is saying, they spend a lot if their cap on a handful of very good players and fill out their roster with cast offs from other clubs.
The eels have had one of the better balanced rosters for a couple of seasons but can't get past week two of finals.
Obviously luck with injuries plays a part in any teams chances of winning a premiership and teams with Gus's approach are playing a higher risk game.
They develop their player HKF that's how they do it, Hughes was developed as a 7 he he was originally a 1. Now it is getting to a point where Pap Munster Grant and Hughes are looking at extensions Bromwich bros Kaufusi are moved on so is Smith.
Gus said with players ranging around minimum wage, you cannot tell me you can get 10 FG standard players for all minimum range.
Look at Melbourne with Smith Slater and Cronk a great spine does wonders whoever is around the squad. Gus is saying you get top class players wherever I.e. Kikau.
Name me a team that does not have a good spine that is winning now HKF, Canterbury do not and will not due to spending on the players they have in other positions. I'm not saying Gus is wrong overall, the value system is spot on, what I'm saying is wrong is getting the best players no matter where they play and ignoring the spine, Which is what he is doing at Bulldogs only having Burton and Reed, no 1 no 7. Look at Bulldogs roster on paper now, you tell me are they sitting where they should be on the ladder? Just laugh how Gus looks at it yet is not doing it the way Canterbury should, good juniors allow you buy class forwards, bulldogs don't have a good junior base, if they had a 7 in lower grades then you go fine buy Kikau and TPJ to assist the rookie with Burton and Mahoney, they don't even have that
Penrith, Melbourne, Us, Souths last year, arguement for Roosters with Walker getting better, only exception is Cronulla where Hynes and Brailey are really good and Kennedy and Moylan are fine
The best teams have a class spine, you get a class spine and work around them
Of course they developed players, they do it better than anyone (panthers are probably at the same level now) but they still spend most of their salary cap on a few very good players.
Des Halser takes the same approach, I knew a player that was at the dogs when hasler first went there after winning premierships with manly, the first thing he said was there were too many players earning over minimum wage on the dogs roster, he rectified that and they made a couple of grand finals.
Tell me a team that has won a comp lately that took the spread your salary cap around approach, there is none except for maybe the panthers who are in a unique situation of having a plethora of local talent all coming through at the same time.
When Gus brought up that stat of some teams spend their full 9mil and only have a team value of 4 mil that is right
Des also brought through Ben Barba, had Ennis, had Hodkinson and Reynolds developed, granted not on much but a plan in place as to who was going to be in the spine
Bulldogs 2023, lose Dufty and say who will be 1 can't tell you.
