Great players can't transition to great coaches

This blog is based on a comment I made about Bert Kenny's "don't put foran at half back" comment.

This was my response :

"Bert you were a legend. But when you win your 1st game as coach I'll listen to your advice. Bert is a fine example of a player who relied on amazing natural talent and instinct that cant be taught. Typically these phenoms don't make good coaches. Extra credit referral = Wally Lewis, Andrew pass-out-at-airport Johns."

For all you league armchair historians, are there and great players who made great coaches?

Or, is it players who had to rely on tactics and guile, who make the better coaches?

  • Bellamy?
    Hasler?
    Green?

    Jason Taylor.
See, you didn't do much homework on this one did you Daz? Lol
    • Would you qualify these guys as "great players". I put them all in the "grinder, tactical" class.

I'm talking about the real legends of the game who gave coaching a go.

      Kenny, Wally,  Stuart etc.

    • But then again there is Ricky Stuart Grunta I think that alone proves his theory..

      Then there is
      Mick Cronin
      Ron hilditch
      Stephen Kearney
      Michael hagan
      Mick potter
      Nathan brown
      Brad Fittler

Hmm most have been at parra maybe we are the problem...
  • Ah ok.
    Taylor covers all bases. ;/

Seriously, Hasler was one of the greats.
    • again mate, I'd have to say taylor was a tactition/ good goal kicker (not a great). An so far an average coach. So he's disqualified on 2 counts :)

And hassler. Yeah, he was a good grinder, but not naturally blessed with a killer skill set. I'd put him in the dedicated grinder class, who I think make the best coaches as they know how to get the most out of themselves and hence others.

  • Farking great politician too.
Very good businessman and has recently got business of the year award for his new multi vitamin and health food range, 'Mal Nourished'.
Got to get up early to keep up with a Queenslander, otherwise your curtains fade.
  • yeah, was in 2 minds about him. Ireckon we should look at it in terms of a premier ship coach. Otherwise we'd have to say Fatty is a great coach.......cough cough choke!

  • Yeah, I reckon a good origin player counts. Time will tell, but I suspect you're "wright" :)

  • I hope so, I really do.
Not a fan of Barrett or Manly.
