Mutts,
Great pick up. I have said for a while now, billy K is a gun. But he is lazy and we or a good strong line runner can get him. That side is their weakness. Whether we are playing good enough to get that line running remains to eb seen. Last week watching both Matterson and LANE drop to almost voluntary tackles becuase they ran poor lines and risked shepherd penalties worries me. Penrith are very good but WE just have to play straight and tough.
Earlier in the year we seemed to have better line speed and a straight line too. I worry about Sivo's decision making, that simple play where the fullbacks wraps around from the inside seems to bamboozle him and he is rushing up and in whilst jenko stays put and on most occassions he's grabbing at thin air....as much as I like the bloke he is by far our weakest link in defence and the good teams are carving us up through there....I pray (and I'm an athiest) that the penny drops with Sivo sooner rather than later.
Embers how can you possibly say Sivo is our weakest link in defence when our left side has statistically been our best defensive side and I think it's possibly the best defensive edge in the comp (considering up to the Souths game we had the best defence and our right side has let in a lot of tries). I just think that's wrong sorry. Not saying Sivo, like all wingers, makes the occasional wrong decision but overall his defence is good. I'm sure Tuivasa Sheck agrees with me.
I really rate this weekly analysis that Soward and Elliot put together. It's one fo the few places you can actually get game play analysis and not merely more "opinion".
Sivo - Needs to stop holding hands with MJ. Put the rush in away for a while and just simply number up. MJ will get his man 99% of the time. Sivo just needs to hold on his man and worry about the kick behind. This rushing in business no longer works and he's been found out.
Hear how Elliot called out our middle for not pushing up quickly enough which is actally what creates the problem on the edge. On our right that's Moses and Matterson's job.
Kikau, Luai, Crichton - I said in another blog this is Panther's weakness. Direct runners, unders plays, force them to make decisions. This is where we should go all night.
Should be a beauty.
I am not allowed to comment on our wingers defending at 5/8 for fear of offending people.
Funny how everyone else knows this is a major problem at the Eels except the coach - and possibly the players.
I noticed that Waqa tried really hard not to rush up against the Warriors and he had a decent game. But it may be that he is going against his natural instinct.
This exactly Poppa. So frustrating to watch. Some of the dumbest things you can see on a football field, happening too often is more a sign of brainless players than any coaching issue.
When against 12 players last week, we run on the 5th to take the tackle in the corner. Didn't look like scoring. Good field position but surely the first thought should have been roll it in for a repeat set, maintain possession against 12 players. Regularly our 5th tackle options are so dumb.
Some of the 6 agains and penalties we give away are shockingly dumb, putting the team under unnecessary pressure and fatigue. Worst of all last week was Jennings (one of our most experienced) giving away that ridiculous penalty on the 5th tackle while leading by 6 with a couple of minutes remaining. The team had defended the set really well, kept the Warriors in their own half, not in range for an attacking kick and he gifts them an attacking set with an obvious and brainless 2nd or even 3rd interference with the tackled player.
In the set prior in attack, we don't set ourselves up for a field goal attempt, which if successful would have been game over.
If, like in tennis, there was a stat for unforced errors, the Eels would be run away leaders in both attack and defence.
It drives me nuts we can't exert pressure on kickers and playmakers. If only we had Beau Scott at his best , Cleary would be smashed everytime he looked up.
We'd find it a lot easier to gain and keep momentum if you can do those two things well. It's an area that we refuse to improve in.
Matt Elliott is such a good analyst.
I think you can always tell in the first 5 minutes how Parra are going to go and it all comes from their line speed in defence. In our first half of season it was great but second half of season it has been ordinary. The point about pressuring the kicker is a good one tooSup, there have been games in this second half of the season where it appeared as though no one was even trying to get to the kicker and they had all the time in the world. When those things are off well we are going to struggle big time.
Early in the season when we were winning convincingly we had line speed to burn and kickers were under heaps of pressure - however we HAD TO change our playing style to suit the illustrios FOUR BLOCK system and lost all momentum.
Stone should be locked on Cleary and Brown on Luai for the 5th tackle kick.
