“IT WAS a good hit-out, I’m very, very happy to be back, I just want to please Parramatta.’’

And with those words, Danny Wicks officially kick-started the next chapter of his rugby league career.

Wicks pulled on the Eels jumper at Camden on Friday night in what was his first outing in a staggering 1974 days. That’s how long it’s been since Wicks last played for Newcastle before he landed in jail for drug trafficking.

He was sentenced to 18 months in prison — and he spent exactly 18 minutes on the paddock against the Wests Tigers.

Wicks took a few hit-ups, made a bone-jarring tackle which provided the Eels with their first real attacking chance, and at one stage even looked a chance to barge over for a close-range try.

He made his way to the sidelines blowing hard just before the quarter-time break, and was given a congratulatory handshake by Eels teammate Tim Mannah, as well as the Parramatta coaching staff, including Brad Arthur.

“I’m happy and pleased for Danny that he was able to come through unscathed,’’ Arthur said.

“He’s been out of the game a long time, and while we don’t want to talk him up, I’m sure he’ll be OK for us.

“We’ll take each week as it comes with him, we’ll give him a few extra minutes again next week in Alice Springs (in a trial against the Wests Tigers), and see how he goes.

“It’s been a long road back for him, but he’s worked hard and he deserves some time on the field.’’

Wicks wasn’t listed on the official program, which meant the ground announcer failed to acknowledge him before the game. Those in the crowd enjoying the $3.50 sausage sandwiches and mid-strength beer for a moment had no idea the former Knights enforcer was about to resurrect his career.

“It’s been a long while. but it’s good to be back,’’ Wicks told The Daily Telegraph, before he added: “I really do just want to please Parramatta.’’

Wicks is likely to spend a few games blowing out the cobwebs in the NSW Cup for Wentworthville, but could prove a real asset at some stage in the top flight for the Eels up front.

Parramatta boss Scott Seward said Wicks was only signed for this season, but had every hope the prop would be around for the long haul, which would definitely be the case if he reproduced his best football.

Mannah described Wicks as a real gentleman, and was glad to see his fellow front-rower in action.

Meanwhile, Arthur confirmed both Chris Sandow and Will Hopoate would be definite starters for the opening round, despite the star pair being forced out of next week’s All Stars fixture because of injury.

    • The chat with Mannah pretty much lasted the rest of the game. He was walking around the sidelines with Tim and they couldn't stop talking to each other.

    • Sable keeps bagging tim but hasn't tim been our most consistent forward and up there stat wise with the best? Take Ya love affair else snake
  • I see BA confirmed he'll be playing in Alice Springs

    • I agree, unlike those other clowns Ferguson and Carney who make the same old stupid mistakes.

I was especially pleased with Wick's “I really do just want to please Parramatta.’’ comment.

  • Tim must be giving him a few pointers on how to be ferocious out there, while we are on the topic has anybody seen tims latest interview, hilarious, saying how tough we are now under BA, he must have forgotten about the way the season ended last year.

Every year tim comes out and says how tough we are LOL.

    • Do you think toughness is the same thing as aggression Snake? More to the point do you think Mannah isn't tough?

      • Anybody who plays 1st grade footy is tough and you cant last as long as tim does without being tough, yes Tims tough in being able to handle the environment of 1st grade footy, but he lacks a few departments of tough that i rate very highly, yes controlled aggression is one.

You can split hairs with aggression/toughness, yes they have different meanings but fall under the same banner with what im talking about.

I like Aggressive props, and for years we have been minus one with our long termer/lifer in Tim, that means if you have another bookend thats not aggressive aka just a toiler it ends up you lose out to other packs, a lack of controlled aggression is what our packs been missing for years, Choc plays with plenty of controlled aggression, he will lead the way this year.

Barnett is probably signing the last contract of his career, and he's never won a comp. His choices are the defending premiers, who get all the advantages in the world to stay successful, or Parramatta. …"
