Always hated the golden point.
Designed to give instant gratification for TV audiences.
The fact that it decided a premiership will go down as a stain on the game for years.
I live in hope we dump it but not overly confident as the TV execs will have the final say.
Good if its true. It should never have been golden point. If anything, first try or penalty goal wins. And even then, whilst I think you should lose if you give a penalty away within kicking distance, it would also seriously encourage milking for penalty's during extra time.
Go back to a point each for a draw like it used to be. If there's no winner, then the spoils are shared by the combatants.
If it golden try or penalty goal, not only would it encourage milking penalties but it would basically mean refs choose who wins game by blowing a penalty within range. If that is the case then the current course of refs puting whistle away would continue to try to avoid controversy. Or they blow a penalty for 1 team where it can be argued they hadn't blown penalty earlier for opposition. There is perception some teams get preferential treatment from refs as it is so it would just cause a lot more problems.
If penalty goals don't count though and it is golden try, teams would be willing to give penalty after penalty away so any attacking footy on the line would be extremely slow and non existent. It should be extra time or nothing.
My preference would be 80mins regular season and a extra time all finals, origin and internationals
It should be golden try would be way more exciting. , maybe a couple of players have to sit it out to make it easier to score.
It wouldn't be a problem if the referees had the guts to call penalties during golden point. If the referees blew the penalty against the blocking, they wouldn't have had a problem.
Two options really, either make a golden try, or scrap it and give each team 1 point.
Poppa, I seen you mention this before on another blog but I just think this sort of thought process is beyond the dopes running our game. Extra time is probably the best option, force team to play out the 10 extra minutes and then a true winner will emerge. It's no longer a toss of the coin as teams effectively have 10 minutes to score, and will force teams to play for the try rather than the FG.
I'm not sure that idea works Poppa, as you would then have some games distributing 3 points as opposed to 2 points for all other games that don't go to extra time.
An idea I suggested some time back is to have each game worth 4 points. If you win in normal time you get 4 points, loser gets 0. If you win in golden point, you get 3 points, loser gets 1 point. A golden point draw is 2 each.
MeelK your thinking is influenced by the tipping competition on this site . Now that you have hit the lead because of the extra points rule which started last weekend you think extra points are great Lol
What about if you win you get 2 points, if you lose you get zero points, and if it's a draw you get one point each :)
I think you could be on to something kram but that kind of way out there thinking could get you institutionalised.
