Gold Coast Bears

What's everyone's thought on the idea? IMO I don't like it, they should just scrap the GC they've had like 4-5 goes at it. Get rid of them and put in another Brisbane team.

THE North Sydney Bears are set for a shock return to top flight football – via the Gold Coast.

RLW has learned that there are moves for the Bears to buy out the struggling Titans franchise – and rename the team the Gold Coast Bears.

The team will continue to play out of the Gold Coast, but may also take several games a season to the Bears’ home base on the NSW Central Coast.

The Titans went into voluntary administration last year and the club is currently being administered by the NRL.

The NRL would love for someone to take over the running of the team, and the Bears – who last played in the big league in 1999 – are keen to take up the challenge.

Officials are remaining tight-lipped about the takeover but top secret moves are underway behind the scenes.

The Titans will remain as they are for this season, but could well be known as the Gold Coast Bears by next season.

The Bears already have a presence on the Gold Coast, with the massive Seagulls Leagues Club in Tweed Heads owned by North Sydney Leagues Club, whose finances keep the Bears alive.

North Sydney still have a team in the NSW Cup and teams at junior level, but died as a top grade club after an ill-fated venture with Manly – known as the Northern Eagles – collapsed in 2002.

The NRL is keen to see top class league on the NSW Central Coast – a massive growth area – and the return of the Bears would be the first step towards this.

  • BK no idea what your talking about, gold coast bears, can you elaborate please?

    Is somebody proposing this?

    • It's in the news today Snake that the Bears are looking at buying the Gold Coast NRL Franchise.
    • Snake, there are quite a large number of Bears residing on the Goldie as well as many Bear visitors, particularly in the summer months.

This is one of the main reasons you see many twinks such as "baby face" Al Hunt in and around the Gold Coast area - particularly at the beach - regularly.

    • Bears, twinks, tits ... the gold coast has it all lol!
  • Yep the Titans have been going downhill since 2009 with no real evident plan or way back to success. No big name signings on the field, and membership hasn't exactly been big. Crowds have dropped a lot as well. It just isn't financially viable if these things are all happening. The GC just seems like a place where once the novelty wears off, sporting clubs do tend to struggle unless they are very successful. Would be happy to see a Perth team instead or central QLD.
  • Happy for it if the Bears franchise is financially stable enough. The NRL can't own the Titans long term. The GC needs and deserves a team though so happy for it
  • Would be a great fit, 2 perennial losers although I must say the poor old bears did get screwed over by Manly in that joint venture. Would be good to see Parra play at Gosford as well (we'd pack it out)
  • I could see this become as bad if not worse then the Northern Beagles

Having a joint venture 1000kms apart is just crazy

The only way I could see a joint venture is if it was with say Ipswich i.e 2nd Brisbane side.Call the 2nd side South East QLD Titans or something similar.

If they are not going to do that then take the License to say Perth.

    • It doesn't sound like a joint venture as it would be just the one club with links to 2 areas.

  • How are the bears supposedly paying for this takeover?

The Eels would only release Lomax if they "obtained benefit to their football program" and the DT are reporting that had Matterson gone to the Storm, they would have released Lomax immediately!
