Gentlemen of Sport

Much is said about a player's on field ability but rarely is the spot light on the players off-field unless they are in trouble, such is the media of the modern day. Post here about some of the athletes you've seen off the field and your perception of them.

I'll start. Last year, after playing a charity soccer match in the Under 16's, Socceroos star Nicky Carle played the All Age match. At the conclusion of the game when most players went back in the sheds, Carle jumped the fence and mixed with the crowd. I've followed Carle since he played for Marconi (He was playing the charity match at Marconi Stadium) and I was interested in meeting him. Firstly, for a player to jump the fence and mingle in the crowd was one thing, to stand there, after playing 90 minutes and chat with nearly every supporter who wanted to was another thing altogether. He didn't have to do it but he wanted to do it. He's a genuinely nice guy.

Last year I actually had dinner next to Matt Keating. I went to my local Asian restaurant and it was pretty packed. My parents had sat down next to a young looking couple on a relatively large table. I looked up at the couple and instantly recognised that I was sitting a metre away from Matt Keating. I wasn't 100% sure and so I looked at his thumb to see if it was bearing any remnants of his dog bite. Sure enough it was bruised and the scars were still visible. Seeing as he was having dinner with his girlfriend I didn't intrude but I can say that he was a lovely bloke to sit next to and he didn't see himself any better than anyone else.

  • If only the media showed this side of the players rather than the guys who go out drinking. Then again where's the money in that?

  • crow, ive only ever heard bad things about cronin, most so bad i can not publish here, but lets just say that before the cops caught Milat, cronin was on the top of their list, some say they arte still looking at him as an accomplice ....... id believe it...

  • But you'd believe anything that comes out of Evil Moray's mouth

  • Thats funny crow, because i hear he is the Donald Trimbolie of Gerringong, rumours are rife that he is running some dodgy mafia style group out of some hotel, id believe it....

And yes Deputy even moray knows about it.....

  • Tony Bongo is also a great sporting star, whilst i havnt met him, i have heard alot of conflicting reports about him, i only listen to the good ones which are few n far between, but none the less i hear he is a man amoungst men and apparently he is also a very fine bongo player, a man of many talents some say..

  • it was actually Robert Trimbolie i was talking about, not donald lol, he was a mafia boss in griffith, lol

  • Does drinking count as sport?

  • Never met Cadel so I didn't include him in my list but I have heard good things about him. Hopefully I'll meet him at next year's tour.

  • Will be staying up on Saturday night to watch him ride and beat the British. All that riding paid off. Multiple Mountain Biking World Cups, Road World Champion and TDF Champion. He's come along way from Katherine, NT.
