Gareth Widdop

I guess the trolls of the forum are too busy posting Sack BA blogs to have noticed, but, I've read in the paper a couple of times now that Gareth Widdop is apparently desperate to get back to the NRL and is offering his cutprice playing services to basically any team that will take him.

The Cowboys were apparently interested (as a replacement for Jake Clifford) but that interest has wained. Canterbury seem to be buying everyone - but there's been no talk about their interest. And even though the Sharks (who are apparently always in salary cap trouble but always seem to be able to afford a name player) and the cap exempt Roosters haven't made a bid!

The Tigers don't have a decent 5/8th but crickets - and St George don't seem inclined to welcome him back either!

He's a quality footballer and whilst I like the idea of keeping Moses and Brown together (as another pre-season together might finally bring the cohesion we've all been craving from them), Widdop is a mighty fine back-up option if either one is injured or completely loses form. Plus, you can play him anywhere in the backline so he conceivably be looked at to cover Jennings in the centres.

Any thoughts?

  • Great player, just not sure where we'd fit him in, presumably he wouldn't be interested a purely backup role, then again he might be.

Certainly worth inquiring about, and he does look good in B&G.

  • He's asking $500k - a bit steep for a backup player

    • I didn't realise he was asking that much. If he was around the $250k mark, I think it would be a more reasonable option.

    • Apparently he has dropped his asking price to 300k

        • The problem is that the league has maxed out its collective cap, there doesn't appear to be room for him this season

  • Too old for mine, and where/how would you play him?

      • The Morris boy's died mid season because they are to old. Plus look at the team they played for, put them in a ordinary team they wouldn't of looked half as good.

          • Maybe you need a reality check old man, I wasn't being negative at all. Just stating my opinion, which as you seen the couple of years before the Morris boy's struggled in teams not full of super stars.

If you really think the Morris boy's carried the roosters last season, you might need to get your mental health checked.
