Lifting players in the tackle and then carrying them backwards was once never part of the game in my memory i.e. you pushed them back whilst they were on their feet, as soon as their feet leave the ground they should be called held. Stops the wrestling and a lot of injuries from the resulting struggles.

This blight on the game is one of Penriths and Storm 's main attacking weapons....yes it is great to attack through defence but it is a blight on the speed of the game and I would argue it causes a lot of injuries, especially knee and joint injuries.

THis mainly came to my attention watching the top side's and how they assirt themselves over their opponents. Penrith use it literally as a gang tackle and you are now in a situation where we are seeing players between 5/10 metres being carried back over their goal lines, the same things on the wings/sidelines.

I will let some of our more studious members look at the rules, but commonsense tells you if you are straining and struggling in every tackle/wrestle then it causes joint injuries.

I cannot see how it benefits the game as a spectacle and most certainly doesn't give value to the smaller players who are more easily rag dolled! Like to see some stats on knee injuries and the type of tackles they occurr in.

If we can make a discussion out of this, it may bring attention as I think it has become a real negative within the game.

PS Simple instructions from the powers to be and the refs can handle this one, no need to have a board meeting, just bring it in!

  • 100% agree with you Poppa. The back 3 have very little chance when they are taking a kick that lands 5 metres from tryline . They come in numbers and basically fireman carry the player back into the in goal . The first guy releases leaving the two carrying the player and refs are not calling held when clearly the player with the ball has gone into self preservation mode of watch my head and hold onto the ball.

penrith and storm are the best . Comes down to positioning of the kick , lag time and as soon as the winger catches abs returns to the ground the movement starts .   Fucking hate it .

    • Glad you see it my way PT....its pretty bloody obvious to me that it is not in the spirit of the game and has just been "allowed" to happen.

  • Parra perfected it in the 70s.

Ray Higgs and Geoff Gerrard were experts at it but they'd get 1 in under the ribs with the other up top and drive them back and into the dirt

    Only 2 though not 5

    • Yeh! I am picturing this in my mind, can't remember them carrying a player but? driving into the dirt has always happened Lol

We don't have dirt anymore, remember the pantyhose at North Sydney because of the corrugated dirt, I remember Sluggy's mate Shovells (graham olling) running 80 metres to score a try on North Sydney oval because he was scared to get tacked on it (sorry for the embellishment Slugg)

      • Yep can remember the nylon leggings because the ground was bad.

Depends on what you call carrying I guess. I would just call it driving them backwards but remember Higgsy did get the players legs off the ground (not far) and Jethro held them up as they drove them 5 - 10 metres back and into the dust. Can't find a Google of it though.

Distinctly recall Rex calling these gang tackles and definitely a lot 'prettier' than the crap Penrith do with their 5 player 'maul'.

  • U have a big point, but we raise the question as to why we don't do the same thing?

    • Actually I think we did the same to penrith by the end of the game the other night, I suppose I am trying to think of the game in general, no team are angels given the opportunity....it would not be hard to eradicate just the same.

Cannot imagine it is good for the juniors to adopt either, can anyone tell me if it is being mimicked in weekend junior league.

  • We play it bit different. We corner the kick. We load up on tackles 1-3 in tight compressed defence but unfortunately we tend to overshoot the mark or they get a six again because someone will hold a leg out and get pinged .  The fireman carry tackle looks far worse but attracts little or no penalties .  Penrith destroyed south's in last years GF with this tactic once mitchell was no longer the fullback .

  • I have no issues with gang tackles . I just have issues that one on one tackles are not rewarded. That is the real issue .

also that the refs allow the defenders slow the ball by getting their arms tangled with the ball and arm carrying the ball . Those should all be penalised and strip laws amended

    • I understand the ball smother Kenny, it bsically stopping the offload....in the old days the ofloads were more of a pass/set up than the current one's which are give backs to extend the tackle count. It does seem admittantly that the coaches will always invent a way to breaka rule....Interesting you have no issues with them just the same.
