Future halves

I am concerned that BA appears to think our future halves are  6. JA  ;  7. Moses and we will not retain Dylan.

Based on what I have seen our best halve pairing for the next several years is the current: 6 Moses; 7 Dylan

Up to now I thought Moses was the best 5:8 in the world but a mediocre wannabe dominant half. However, I think he is becoming a very good dominant half and will be the best we have for at least the next three years. I agree with Carlo he should be captain, although he needs to act a bit more like a captain - emotional intelligence - I can't talk.

Dylan has the potential to be the $700K half - he just got paid that a bit early. With maturity and experience he will start contributing to the attack. We have only seen glimpses of that before - such as the bomb he put up and caught himself and scored a few years ago. But after last night it is obvious he can potentially provide another point of attack and be one of the best 5/8 in the game.

JA may have potential to be a great half but he is not there yet and will not be for at least a few years. He strikes me as having little natural talent - no power or speed and a bit tall to have the quick hands and feet required for a half. However, he works hard and has a good footy education. Lack of natural talent is  usually a kille;r but some of the best players have little natural talent. Sterling was slow as a snail - if he ever made a break the opposition could go to the pub for a beer and still get back in time to tackle him. Cameron Smith also arguably had little natural physical talent. Sometimes lack of physical talent forces the player to use their smarts to beat the opposition and set up the players around them rather than themselves. Maybe JA can become a great playmaker. But that will take years to develop for first grade standards and until he does he will not lead any first grade team to finals. In my opinion JA should learning his trade in reserves or a side that is sitting at the bottom of the ladder. He should only be depth half and not starting or bench player for a team that wants to make the finals.

Best wishes for JA and hope one day he leads us to a premiership but I do not want to see him as our first choice half until he knocks the door down in reserves or elsewhere - and this is no certainty to happen. Dylan becoming an elite 5/8 is much more likely at this stage. I hope the coaches and management can see this and do their best to retain our current halves.

  • JA is too tentative and lacks confidence. She should be gaining that experience in the 2s.

If JA could control the game with his smarts like Tim Smith, then yes, but he is out of his depth at the moment

They are probably afraid we can't retain dyl.

  • Cameron Smith was amazingly strong.

  • I'd want to see a few more games like last nights before I'd be throwing big extensions at him. Ben Roberts could also play like that once or twice a year.

    • He still has another season after this one on his current contract,  if he continues to show good form for the remainder of this season the club can move early to lock him up long term, if he doesn't they can hold off for another season.

  • Moses and Brown should be our long term halves.

I have seen enough of JA to see that he is not a good half.

What we should be doing with him is bulking him up and moving him to lock.

Give him a couple of seasons at lock in reserve grade and I believe he will excel in the position and turn Into a fine ball playing lock.

    • I agree Brissy in regards to little coin and as long as BA is here JA isn't going anywhere. For us to win the GF this year we need Moses and Brown to play most games which gives JA the chance to have a full year in reserves after he comes back from his surgery

In my opinion he is at least 18 months of a first grade/bench spot however he gives himself the best chance of making it by developing in reserves rather than rushing him into first grade before he is ready

    • He needs to model his game on Cooper cronk, another manufactured half that had very limited natural or physical ability but became very astute at game management with a very good kicking game. Work on those aspects and he may have a future in first grade.

  • Moses has been in the top 3 or 4 halves in the for at least 3 seasons now. Brown obviously has a heap of potential and the basic fundamentals of his footy like his tackle technique are amazing for a player his age. Last night was the best he's played in attack. He's shown he can do it now, and against a top team. No reason he can't be the best 6 in the game by age 25.

  • Still think ja will make a good centre

    • To slow for center.
