FULLBACK MARKET IN AUS AND ENGLAND

What are all of our options in terms of purchasing a player to play fullback. Gordon deal looks unlikely. I'd like to see French but for argument sake lets say we are gonna go out and buy someone (most likely will), and assuming Norman partners Foran, what are all the options? Is there any talent lurking in the super league? Keep in mind we probz have $1milliion to spend, as suggested by many others on the forum once we get rid of sandow, lussick etc (dont have to spend the entire 1 million but gives us good chance to asses the market)

  • I'm still holding my breath for the Gordon deal to come through... but if that doesn't happen...

I'm not aware of there being many/ any good NRL fullbacks available for next year (aside from Gordon). There have been rumors that Alex Johnston might be coming to the Eels next year though. He's the young Souths winger who's off contract at the end of this year and ultimately wants to play fullback, rather than on the wing. His price will be going up and Souths may not be able to hold onto him. He played fullback last week against us. His dream will never come true though, with Inglis at Souths (other than during Origin).  He has a bright future, but maybe not the best, if we plan on having Bevan French in the long term (?). There's been a bunch of blogs discussing this, though that seemed to be before everyone was talking up Bevan French (after he was promoted to Wenty).

Matt Bowen will be off contract from Wigen and available for next year. He'll be turning 34 at the start of the season. Could be a good on a one year deal, to mentor French. Could even be good as a backup, though he may just with to retire. He played 12 years at the Cowboys and may just with to head back up there to settle down, assuming he has all his friends and family up there. It's been a long career for him. 1 year at Parra might not be worth it.

Kevin Lock is no longer wanted by Salford. Perhaps he'll go back to the Warriors, as Sam Tomkins will be heading back to England (homesickness). That will save the Warriors a lot of money and Lock should be cheap. Could be good if we could get him though. He's the former NZ international fullback. He might return to form back in the NRL.

    • Johnston has re-signed with Souths for 2 years. Unfortunately he's no longer an option.
    • Not sure if the warriors would sign locke now thatthey have rts
  • Ah damn - I missed that news. Good for Souths though. Maybe Russel was able to sort out some good 3rd party deals.

  • It will be interesting to see where he ends up. Apparently Salford are trying to push him out and focus on local juniors (instead of high paid ex-NRL players).

  • Not sure if Jordan Kahu has re-signed with Broncos but he would be an awesome pick up. I also think we need to chase Mitch Cornish, he will get plenty of opportunities with Forans dodgey hammies. Also if Norman, Foran combo fails, he would slot straight into the team. Even a spine of Norman, Foran, Cornish and Peats is appealing.
    • Kahu is still un-signed and would seem a good fit given his utility value. Could play fullback next year and then shift into the centres if French keeps developing.

  • Throw everything at Richie Myler, the kid is brilliant wants to come to Australia to test himself then pick up Auva'a and Fisiahi on the cheap. We then have ourselves a brilliant halfback, quality centre and winger/fullback without busting the bank.
    • Just watched mylers highlights reel, hes got the skills and a good elusive running game, and looks great in that blue and yellow jersey.
    • He's quick, a strong defender, a good kicking game. He's a competitor.He's exactly what we need.
