Fuifui Moimoi to shift to second row?

For me the most interesting selection this week is Fuifui Moimoi starting from the bench, and I think it's possible that my long-held desire to see Moimoi as a rampaging second rower just might be set to come to fruition.

Right now, Stephen Kearney is bursting at the seams with front rowers. Tim Mannah, Mitchell Allgood, Taulima Tautai and Justin Poore all have strong claims on a front row spot. Kearney also has Shane Shackleton and, in reserve he also has players of the calibre of John Mannah and Peni Terepo.

However, what Kearney lack in his side is that barnstorming second-rower that can crash through opposition defences out wide. I've long-argued this would be an ideal role for Moimoi, and it's also one which I believe can extend his career for at least another couple of years. Kearney has named five props in his side, which gives me reason to believe (hope) that Moimoi could be about to make a positional change.

Moimoi has been used in this role, on occasions. During our 2009 winning streak, Daniel Anderson was regularly using him on the fringes and to great effect. Ironically, in the 2010 trial against the Panthers, Moimoi played almost the entire match out on the fringes. And why not. One-on-one, Moimoi is almost impossible to stop.

However, arguably we've needed Moimoi more in the middle, as we've never had four other quality props to allow Moimoi to play in a different role because his go-forward has been too important for us. Kearney gets that luxury, and if he's thinking along the kinds of lines I'm thinking, he's thinking that a combination of Hayne, Moimoi and Tonga is an almost unstoppable combination of attacking threats for any defence to handle.

Moimoi's presence on the fringes, will absolutely force players to hang off either the ball carrier or supports and will create the kind of space that Jarryd Hayne has only been able to dream about previously. Leave Moimoi one-on-one, especially running at a five-eighth three in and how often are they going to bring him down?

  • I think he would get caught out a bit defending on the fringes but there is no reason he couldn't play as a prop and defend in the middle but scout on the fringes in attack.

  • interesting.....................i heard this from last season, but thought it was crap

  • No different to what Sam Thaiday does for Brisbane, I think it's exactly what we need

    • He would be better than Thaiday.  Thaiday is hopeless, too many errors and penalties.

  •

I would think it would be a great move. The way I would do it would be, start Fui at prop, play him for his 20-25 minutes, then rest him till 10 into the second half and bring him on in the backrow for Hindy or Smith for the last 30 minutes.

    • Why start at prop at all? FMD

  • I think you need to do a video clip again Phil...
This one has more merit than the Hayne for 6 campaign due to the nature of our forward roster depth this season...

Maybe we can all email the link as site members to the club so they can not ignore it...
    • Like.

  • Couldn't agree more.......!!!

  • This is a good call. I think we could use a rampaging storm-trooper second rower, like what Blair did in Melbourne.
