Great news, maybe they can use an Aussie flag instead.
All these indiginous rounds do is start trouble and division, are they ever happy with anything?.
The history of the Aboriginal flag and how it got to this point is a comedy.
Maybe they need a new flag they can actually use without having to pay for it.
You can't say the history of the flag is not Aussie at all. Of course it is, it's our national flag.
But I've long been a campaigner for a new flag. The fact we still use a British ensign is a bit lame when compared internationally. It's also virtually identical to NZ's , which is again a tad lame.
However settling on a new design is going to be nigh on impossible, especially in the super woke times we live in. Everyone would bitch and moan regardless of what is chosen. There's no way you're getting consensus nowadays.
Maybe we should have solved this back in the 60's when Canada solved their flag issue, abandoning the British ensign for the single maple leaf. A design that is unmistakably Canadian and rather uncontroversal (unless you're from Quebec).
I'd like a design that is unmistakably Australian and also not controversial. A single kangaroo is probably about it.
Aussie flag? You mean the one with the big union jack? Apart from the southern cross there is nothing aussie about it. Even the colours are British. The history of Australian flag is not uniquely Aussie at all. Agree with you on one thing, we do need a new flag ... one that acknowledges our land owners too.
Haha "Europeans who played a massive part of building this country?"
Convicts built this country you bespawler. You want a flag that acknowledges criminals?
Yes
Shit Pops, I agree with everything you say except the last bit about genocide. Read the U.N. definition of genocide, put together by Raphael Lemkin who coined the term and was initiated the genocide convention.
We hit every marker in terms of genocide in regards to Indigenous Australian's.
I think the Aboriginal flag represents a hell of a lot more criminals and wife beaters than the Aussie flag, if we are going on percentages.
And thinking convicts built the country is cute, it certainly wasnt Aboriginals, thats for sure.
Totally agree!
The guy that designed the flag, Luritja man Harold Thomas took an action to the Federal Court in 1997 to assert copyright over the flag he says he designed in 1971. He won the case and was granted copyright.
Since then, Mr Thomas has entered into a number of licensing agreements and consequently made significant money for himself. It is one of these licensing agreements, with WAM clothing in QLD that has led to this stand-off with the AFL.
If Aboriginal people feel understandably aggrieved they should direct their anger solely at the man who designed the flag and subsequently made money from its use for years. Although he's done nothing illegal.
There are many well funded Aboriginal organisations and indeed wealthy individuals who may be able to 'buy' the flag's copyright from Mr Thomas. Doing so would ensure the flag is 'free' and owned by Aboriginal people. Asking the Federal government to do it, well that defeats the flag's entire purpose.
