Fox NRL Commercial

While watching the women's cricket final Fox put up their promotion for the game (rugby league) with Barnsey singing along with old and new footage of players.

No flags and no ladies kissing. Take note Toddy, how hard can it be.

  • I tried to watch just now (but only got half way when screen went black); it looked v different in that it showed players from past and current and no politcal side show..... is there a link?

    • Couldn't find one.

  • build a bridge

    • Sorry. I thought Kevin Rudd did that.

  • Is the new NRL ad going to stop you from watching the NRL?

I think it won't, therefore the ad wasn't intended for you. You're a rusted on fan that will watch regardless of what ad the NRL put out there. The people that don't watch the NRL are the ones it was intended for. To show that our game is inclusive is only good for the game and these commentators that are putting shade on it don't have the best interest of the game at heart.

In terms of the Indigenous representation in the ad, I think it's fantastic. Indigenous peoples have always been and will continue to be at the core of our game. Have you ever spent any time in the country? Go to any local rugby league game and you will see what this game means to them. Having grown up in a remote country town then a somewhat regional country town I can tell you we live and breath footy. Sorry that there were not enough white males on the screen to fulfil your quota and inspire you. We are so underrepresented in society. Won't somebody please think of US! Speaking of inspiration. Do you still aspire to grow up and play rugby leage? Or is it a bit past you? I'm not sure if you can remember what it's like to be a kid, but if you're a child that is Indigenous, a girl, gay, this ad is letting them know that are included in our game and representation is everything especially to children.

In terms of the Fox ad, pretty sure the NRL's ad has more highlights of the game. Unless I watched the wrong version but it only went for a short while and then cut to black. The version of the song is terrible and the "special effects" and concept is dumb. It's a shame, because they normally do good stuff. Like someone said, we spend more time looking at Jimmy's boots than anything of note.

Again, the NRL's ad wasn't created for the rusted on fans. They are trying to grow the game and insure it's prosperity in the future, all while respectfully acknowledging the role people of diverse backgrounds have played in making our game what it is today. That includes you too.

      • Well said Pop, couldn't agree more.

      • Look Poppa, I'm not going to change your mind and you won't mine. I have next to no marketing experience apart from what I do for my business, but don't you think the happy group of existing clients will get their fill when the season actually starts and their team is playing? In my opinion, the ad simply wasn't made for us, I loved it anyway, it seemed you didn't, I can't understand why you would not like it simply because of the fact that diverse sectors of the rugby league commiunity are represented in it. You can see what the game means to people in this ad, plus you're showcasing some of the greatest achievements in the game. Is everyone missing the fact that there are actual rugby league highlights in there too? Some of the greatest moments in the history of the game.

I'm just going to put what you wrote about the rules and interpretations to the side as I feel that is a different issue and address my main argument regarding the ad- representation is everything. Representation to children, huge! It’s going to dictate whether or not they play and/or love the game.

To say that politics has no place in sport is really naive. Sport always has and always will influence politics and vice versa.

      • Hey Poppa,
I LOVE your commentary about footy, the game and all things Parra, but you're pretty far off the mark when it comes to marketing and strategy, respectfully.

The NRL would have data showing that existing fan retention is fairly stable, but the long-term strategy they need to focus on is growth. In order to sustain any new teams whether it be in Perth, Brisbane or the Central Coast is to gain reach. They need to reach new fans, new families in a wider net to increase their adoption rate.

You cannot increase growth with an existing user base at a rate they need to gain a better TV deal that would support a new venture.

      • one eyed, is that the pot calling the kettle black

      • That's not correct Poppa. The 'existing customer base' as you term it might be pissed off about the ad, but their patronage of the game in all form will note wane one iota!

Therefore, their feelings don't matter from a marketing point of view.
