Forward Passes & Play the Balls

Has anyone else noticed that their seems to be an excessive amount of forward passes going unnoticed by the referees in comparison with previous years? Also I was under the impression that in the play the ball that the rules say the ball has to be touched by the foot, is this correct? If so there are also an excessive amount of play the balls being done incorrectly and players are getting away with it. I suspect it's due to teams being taught to practice quick play the balls.

  • Yes the last few years theres been a shit load of forward passes let go, often 1m.

Also a lot of players not playing the ball with the foot, zero contact of the ball on the foot and no effort to play it, our very own Semi is the worse in the comp at doing it, its going to be called soon.

  • Out of dummy half is the worst... Kaysa has been called for a couple this year. Cameron '3rd Referee' Smith I think is the worst - he will send at least 6 or more per game forward from dummy half... not that there's anything wrong with that... it's darling Cameron and he gets to play under different rules to everyone else... we all must accept this.

The play the ball rule I just don't get - either police it and penalise it (which will mean about 150 penalties per game) or scrap the damn rule and just say it has to be rolled back.

    • If the play the ball is not touched by the foot and pushed backwards. Then it's really no different than touch footy. They should be penalised if they don't play the ball correctly and consistently by the referees. That's why some teams are quick from dummy half because the play the ball is not done correctly. The rules are a bit questionable at the moment"
  • I've been giving an ear bashing to people I know this year about forward passes and I have only seen half the games. I love it when someone makes a break and the referees and touchies are 10-20 yards behind the ball. The last few passes they don't have a clue if they are forward or not and the bunker can't do a thing. Our game is becoming more like Union where a pass that is further forward than a flat pass is the norm. I think players if they make a break will tend to throw a flat pass because they know the bunker can't rule on it. I think its the greyest area in the game at the moment.
  • I wasn't aware the rule had been changed. That makes it really extra difficult to monitor I would imagine.
