I think we do miss Sandow a touch in our set plays on the line. Neither Norman or Foran have the acceleration he did, and it means the defensive line can a) slide and cover our shift, and b) the edge defenders can get up fast and shut it down.
I have hardly seen us get outside teams on our left, and that isn't Jennings or Semi's doing. Jennings is under pressure every time he gets the ball as the defence is up quickly on him. Sandow would take off fast when he caught the ball and release to Norman, who had an overlap and simply had to pick out Robinson, Taka or Semi to finish it off. At the moment, we are relying on Norman throwing a pearler of a pass, and the defence to make a mistake, as the overlaps just aren't there as much. You can see it from how we have scored our tries, only 1 (Gutherson, Rd1) was us getting outside a team. The others have been us playing through teams with short balls and barge over tries (Peats, Edwards, Taka in Rd 2, Semi x2 vs the Bulldogs in Rd 3, Jnr vs Tigers in Rd 4. )
Gordon needs to add more but he also doesn't have that acceleration off the mark that previous players did. I'm not saying we should have kept Sandow or Robbo, but there is a noticeable difference in our attack on the edges without them. It lacks a bit of speed and the defence has more time to shut us down.
Ricky?
No doubt they were both poor on the weekend but thats how footy goes.
Interesting you bring up line drop outs, without seeing any stats it seems our line drop out rate has been deplorable under BA, we were shocking at it last year and nothings changed, why are we so bad at applying pressure to get a repeat set, its one of my pet hates.
BA needs to really sort this out imo, repeat sets are a huge part of the game.
Foran was bought to fix this and has been really poor IMO. The kicks aren't actually getting to the in-goal. It's like theyre mis-kicking them or something, because at the moment it looks like we are barely kicking the ball and it goes about 2m before someone dives on it. Same last week against the Dogs too. When you have Jennings in your side the grubber kick needs to be a go to play if nothing is on, let him use his speed, but the ball has to be in-goal. Maybe we're scared of the 7 tackle set if it goes dead? The "better a bit long than short" probably is negated by the 7 tackle set threat if it goes dead but I still think at least give us a chance to score/get a repeat set though instead of shanking it a metre into someone's leg?
Obviously missed watching the nines this year Dunc?
Geez Duncan, I have obviously been watching different games to u mate. IMO Norman has really matured & last season I thought he was one of our best.
