Folau and AFL

A mate of mine from Melbourne texted me to say that there have been reports down there to say Folau has signed with GWS to play AFL.

If so, I've just rolled out the odds on us having a shot at Inglis by about 5 points.

  • yep was all over tripple m after the game too, will be interesting to see if Qld pick him now for origin ??
  • Yeah I reckon we can give up on the Greg Inglis pipedream. The Broncos will be all over him now and with plenty of money to spend. Seeing as Inglis is a good Queenslander I'm sure he would love to go home. Oh that's right, he's never actually lived in Queensland, he just plays for them in State of Origin.
    • You really don't like seeing players get a big payday do you Mal??

Reality is he was off contract and it's a stretch to demand loyalty to a club whom he's been with for only 6 months. As a big fan of AFL I cannot see Folau being successful for the simple reason: he can't kick! I'm just happy we locked up Hayne because it reality, how attractive would he have been to the GWS? Western Sydney boy who can run, catch, pass and kick!!
    • Folau and K Hunt WILL fail badly!
AFL is quite possibly the worst sport on the planet! It's embarrassing that people think it's our national sport!
    • Disgusting? r u serious Mal, he can set his whole family up m8 , they probably have nothin! Who here would knock that money back , he's still contracted so if we ( qld) dont pick we are just being catty p.s Athur Beeston should shut his FKN mouth and remember were he come from. GOOD ON HIM!
  • folau to GWS means Broncos will make a big play for Inglis
    • and as Parra Mafia said probably get him too.

Seems our own stocks are getting a bit depleted for next season tho.

Question. Does Jono Wright look any good for the wing?
I live too far away to be able to follow a lot of these guys so only get info on this site or watch em play on tv.

Interesting the RL players going to AFL - wonder if they can keep up the pace of that game.
Don't remember Folau or Hunt as a kickers either.
  • His signing is as much about the corporate dollar opportunities as his promotion of the game.
The AFL succeeds on the premise that each club gets 30,000+ members per year.
Israel will be used to secure initial corporate sponsors, but also to get supporters to pay their annual membership and thus underpin the future financial security of the new AFL franchise. It's a similar blueprint to Hunt signing for Gold Coast.
They'll get more than $3m worth of free advertising in the National papers, he'll get a go in some trial matches for additional publicity, and when competition points are on the line he'll be selected only on his merit.
At 24 and at the end of his contract, if he doesn't crack it (or is unlikely to crack it) then he can come back to league or union who'll pay him a couple of hundred grand a year to play.
If anyone watches the AFL have a look at Carlton play - one of their forwards is a guy by the name of Setanta O'Hailpin. He's an Irishman that's taken three or four years to develop into an AFL forward having had a non-AFL background. Mike Pyke from the Swans was a rugby union player (playing for Canada I think) and is now playing AFL after two years in the system.

Think about it - 21 years of age, a 3yr $3m contract - who can blame him. Good luck to him.
    • And Mike Pyke kicks the ball like his legs are made of cement! O'Hailpin came from a Gaelic football background and still took 3 - 4 years. Very rarely do you see kids under the age of 23 playing at the AFL level because its such a massive leap in class from VFL to AFL so you're right, Folau and Hunt - who are not noted kickers - are doomed to fail.
  • Parra mafia, I'm pretty sure he did live in Queensland for a time, he played his first juniors games for Bowraville, but when he played for the Australian schoolboys team he was attending a Brisbane high school.
