Flashback: The day we bashed the Bears

With no rugby league for the foreseeable future and the rumours this season may not restart, I propose that each day we have blog on a game in our history. Highlights should be provided where possible.

Today, let's have a look at the clash between the Parramatta Eels and North Sydney Bears in round 15 in 1998.

Led by Dean Pay, the Eels belted the Bears in a physical clash, winning 25-12.

  • Ironically, we came up against the Bears in that years finals series at Parramatta Stadium, and won that game 25-12 also.

  • That was an awesome team once Smith, Dymock, John Simon, Jason Bell, Aaron Raper, Dennis Moran & Dave Penna figured out how to coexist and not constantly overcall each other. So many playmakers, just wouldn't be able to fit all that playmaking talent under todays salary cap.

  • How good was the game in the 90's - early 2000's, so much faster then the game today, none of that wrestle garbage introduced by Bellamy, he is without a doubt the worst thing to happen to the game as a spectacle.

  • Was at that match with my nephew and I have never seen a side attack in defence. Unbelievable. Remember Taylor's nose was smashed in a tackle. I also recall Dean Pay was hammering the bears.

  • best game I've ever seen remember it well, Mark tookey was on fire

  • Great blog SSE . I think it's a great thing watching old memorable Parra games in between live ones ( however do we have enough to post each day for next 6 / 12 months ?lol ).

  • I was there. The crowd went bananas. Dean Pay was brutal. It was a memorable match for sure.

  • Your proposal is formally accepted Super given no complaints. Where is today's game then ?Sluggs test match sounds better than nothing at all lol ?

    • Thanks Slugg . I am going to search for a complete replay or at least more than shown . The atmosphere in that game was electric and no wonder we call league the greatest game of all with the large noisy crowd spilling down close to the dead ball line without fencing it appeared  And all the kids allowed to run on the field after the game . Love the old SCG !!!

Michael Ericson replied to The Captain's discussion Why are our Boards fixated on stability?
"Stability at Board level is a good thing but that doesn't have to translate to an unwillingness to implement change in the organisation where needed. If the Board have rejected a Bennett approach to coach Parra in 2025 - and I stress if - that's not…"
