Fennel, the unsung high fibre super food Hero

I was introduced to Fennel at the age of 4 by my parents, I eat fennel every day, I just love it.

I'd like to introduce this super fibrous vegetable to my fellow Eels supporters. Forget Celery, boring.

Do yourself a favour and discovery the magic of Fennel, chop into onion shaped pieces, add extra virgin olive oil with a dash vinegar and you're right to go. Add to lettuce of choice if desired or just eat as is.

Fennel is a acquired taste not dissimilar to olives, once the love of fennel is acquired you will never look back.

Your bowels will forever thank you and trust me, you will be as regular as clock work whilst enjoying the the rush eating the super, super fibrous and delicious natural goodness of Fennel.

  • Goes with apple slices and red wine vinegar to make a great salad to accompany roast pork. Fennel and Roast pork are best friends.

    • Sounds good Muttman, I don't eat pork however the idea of apple slices and red wine vinegar appeals non the less.

I don't think Fennel has boundaries, I eat it boiled with pasta, battered and fried through to the pickled variety.

Such a versatile vegetable only second to the mighty Eggplant which I also worship.

  • Ive been told it has a aniseed/licorice after taste. Hate licorice.

    • lol Benedict, I must say the thought of pork fat and Fennel or pork fat and anything sounds pukable.

I eat Fennel both cooked and raw, I eat Fennel raw most of the time.

Mate I'm impressed that you tried nonna's dish, I would of puked at the idea let alone eat it.

The Fennel is not to blame, It's a shame that the irresponsible use of Fennel has left you with a bad Fennel memory. I wouldn't be surprised if this nonna makes broccoli with chocolate sauce.

  • I will definitely give it a try. I'm all for the healthy eating lifestyle, but have never directly tried fennel.
It looks like an onion. Does it taste like one or have the garlic breath effect.?
    • Chief Fennel tastes nothing like an onion or garlic, if anything it leaves your breath fresh.

It's hard to describe the flavour of Fennel, it's not over powering or offensive. The texture is crunchy, juicy and stringy. If you like celery than you should like Fennel, celery has a stronger flavour if anything.

It will cost you less than $2.00 to find out, chop off the stems, peel and throw away the outer layer, slice like an onion, add olive oil and dash of vinegar.

I dress my Fennel salad about 30 minutes before I eat it, allowing the vinegar and oil to soak the Fennel makes it taste even better.

  • Joe exactly how often would you like me to shite?

I'm as regular as clock work already so I reckon if I threw the good old Fennel into my diet I may become a little too regular if you know what I mean. I don't want to start wearing depend.

Nothing wrong with adding a little draino to the plumbing every now and then, but everyday?

    • lol Frank, it's not just the regularity of your bowel movement but also the quality of how the store is released.

Your turds will become Olympic divers, straight as an arrow, very little splash and will always hit the middle.

You'll use a lot less toilet paper and you can also throw away your toilet brush.

I reckon if Semi, Haynes or Sivo had persisted in the NRL we might be talking about them breaking the NRL try scoring record. I think Semi and Hayne were close to 1 try per game average over 100 games? Thoughts?
