Favourite Unfashionable Player

We all have a favourite player who doesn't get the accolades or the headlines they deserve. Yet they are the player that we personally cheer for the most. Who are yours, both past and present?Mine are as follows:1960s- Ivor Lingard -hello Cumberland throw!1970s - Ed Sulkowicz -great step for a centre. Great try in the 1977 Grand Final.1980s- Steve Sharp - honest hard worker. Got the job done. Sound familiar?1990s - Chris Lawler - versatile, fast. Not favoured by Brian Smith2000s - Brad Drew -great dummy half. Again not kept by Smith.Current - David Gower - I suspect I'm not alone on this. No newspaper headlines but he's important to our team.I expect lots of questionable names to be put forward but also hoping for players to get some recognition.

  • Paul Taylor never got the accolades he deserved.
    • Agree with all the above nominees, especially Chris Lawler who was never respected by Brian simply because he came to us straight from 'park footy' and so had no 'pedigree'. But our fans loved him and let Brian know at season's end '97'.  'Lawler...Lawler!

I'd like to add 'Papa Clinton' from the late '80s, what a toiler he was.

  • I think there is a fair chance that at the end of this or next year Peni Terepo may be a nominee?

ATM though definitely Gower, past Brad Drew for sure. He was a very capable 9.

    • Was just thinking Peni is in the style of player that could be a nominee...but yes too early to call though

      Dean Widders for me

Luke Burt should have got SOO call up at some stage

Think Ma'u still doesn't get enough credit on the wider nrl stage either

  • Peter Johnston.
    Fark he hit them hard.
    Whatever happened to him?
  • How good has Peni been the last couple of times he played. Really has stepped up and add alot off the bench.

I was a but worried at the end of last season.

So far BA made the right choice in keeping him over Tanginoa.

But yeah Gower in the current squad. David Solomona, i use to jump off my seat when he came on off.

  • I wasn't sure about Brad Drew because he was given some accolades. I think the fact that Smith never seemed to give him the game time that I thought he should have (from memory he used to give Daniel Irvine as much time as Drew) led to my nomination. Peter Johnston is a good nominee.
  • I agree. BS ruined Lawler. He was a handy player and could kick goals from the sideline.

Maybe Steve Ella, cause Kenny, Sterlo, Price and Cronin get all the mention from the glory days.
  • Sixties i was a huge Brad Drew fan, gun player imo, same with David Solomona.

A few more, Clinton Schicofski, Taylor and Mosely, PJ Marsh, Ian Hindmarsh, Graham Atkins.

  • John Muggleton.

"Agree LB, that's why in my team below I have Walker starting at Hooker, surely he can do a job for 20mins and then allow Ryley Smith to come on and play the last 60mins only requiring that one interchange for the Hooker rotation.
Walker can then…"

There were periods where he was gassed but to his credit he kept turning up and didn't let the team down.
