Fans Halves Combo Battle.

The old Morts/Robson combo is finished. Fans of that combo had their chance. I must congratulate that combo cause it did take us to a GF.... with the help of the Chosen One.... lolz.

Now with our new Morts/Keating halves combo, I'm looking back to see if there was any improvement over the old Morts/Robson halves combo. I don't know about you but there was not much difference between them although it is a little improvement. Lets not forget it is still early and in a couple of rounds we will see if the Morts/Keating combo will work or not.

Last night the Morts/Keating combo showed us a Bad kicking game, No leadership, and Poor attack structure. One can easily match it with Morts/Robson. Whats worse is even with our forwards playing their best game last night, Morts/Keating didn't or couldn't do anything to exploit it. Pity the Morts/Robson combo didn't have our forwards playing for them hard like last night to see how they would have exploited it. And the worst, Morts and KK have played together for years so its not like they both had to gel together to play good.

Plus Morts is seen as our future halfback. Robson offered him nothing nor has KK to enhance his game.

So for now the Morts/Robsons fans had there chance and failed. Now the Morts/Keating fans have their chance to prove us wrong.

Until then, us Morts/Mateo fans will have to wait. I for one believe the only halves combo to help Parra as well as Morts be the real deal is the Morts/Mateo halves combination.

Like I have always said, only a Morts/Mateo combo will we see our best results. Through Mateo's experience and unlimited skill, Morts will be a better player and an electric halves combo that will bring fear to all nrl teams.

  • I think the Keating/Morts combo will be the one which Ando will go with for the rest of the year. I thought David Furner said a very interesting point in his press conference "Josh McCrone knows his roll for the team". At the moment I don't think our halves know their role and if they do they aren't carrying it out. Both playmakers spent time at first receiver & second. We need a morts to be first receiver & steer the team around & then you can have mateo & keating as your 2nd receivers. Morts needs to step up & take control.
  • KK's kicking was quite good in the second half. He put up several testing bombs, almost secured a 40-20 with bugger all angle to work with and earned a couple of line drops outs for his team.

I agree with haven't anyone at the club with the kicking game of say Jamie Soward, but KK's kicking last night was better than what we've seen so far from DM or Robson. Kicking was a weakness last year and will be again this year though, unfortunately!
  • KK was great last night, guy tried his butt off and will only get better with playing time.

I am a big fan of KK and would like to see him take control with Morts. I don't know if it will happen but i am hoping it will and if they click boy watch out. It is a lot to ask from them but thats what they get paid to do, produce.
  • Seriously, if you're fair dinkum about an alternative partnership for this season anyway, wouldn't you have to say Keating/Mateo - they work well together as they did in a couple of games last year. Keating gives you the energy and the better kicking game and Mateo gives you the size and skill.

Can you imagine how bad our kicking game would be with Mortimer and Mateo. And its a defensively poor combination too. Mateo gets stood up at five-eighth and IMO is an inferior defender in that position to Keating.

I don't understand why people automatically put Mortimer in there ahead of Kris, when Kris has clearly been the better of the two this year. Just because one has signed up for a shedload of money shouldn't make him an automatic selection in front of someone who has outperformed him consistently this year.
  • Phil, check my other posts etc, we need Mateo at 6 and yeah i agree KK 7. Morts signing has killed us so far, maybe he will be great in the future time will tell but what do we do with Morts?

I don't think anybody should be protected but wow what a big pay cheque for nothing at the moment and to bench him or sit him out what is that going to achieve? Personally i think the kid has a heap of talent but we need to win now and we may miss the boat with him at the realm of the team.

This should be Haynes and Mateo's team simple as that. Everything else, build it around that.
  • All i have to say is.I was impressed with kk how good is his defence.
  • Disagree with you on alot of points mate. I dont know if you were at the game - but I was and I watched kk and morts very closely. They definitely provide us with more direction and leadership; both players were yelling and organising the team around the park all night, with robson providing us with us direction and stability from hooker. I like the idea of Bargearse - I think we should keep Morts at half and let both Mateo and KK roam around at second receivers.
  • I like Mateo at 5/8 and he like's playing there.
Just because of his size everyone thinks he should be a forward. Should Taniela Tuaki also be a forward? Maybe Eric grothe should be a forward, he gets more meters than half of them anyway?

Mateo is the captain of the Tonga side, plays at 5/8 and sets up almost everything for them and doe's there kicking. Which i would dissagree with most people and say is not bad. Nothing could be wores than what we have done so far.

I belive Mateo is a John Sutton type 5/8, big, mobile and skill full. Just because he is big doesn't automatically should be a forward. As for who should be our half back? Morts hasn't played that well but neither has KK. Flip a coin but i think Mateo should be given a run at 5/8 and lets see if he can spark something and earn his new contract. If he can't then so be it, nothing could be worse than the way we have played so far and soon we won't have enough time to see if it would work.
  • Everyone has this misconception that kk and morts have played together for yrs, this is so wrong. They played about 10 games together if that. KK has always been a yr or 2 above morts,if i remember correctly they played together in the toyota cup in 2008 but kk started playing at nrl level.
  • I agree with you phil in regards to having KK in the team in front of Morts,Daniels kicking game has been diabolical so far this year and it puts us way behind the 8 ball with field position.I also think Hayne should kick for touch because he makes an extra 30 mtrs per kick and although he rushed one and failed to find the line he is much better value than Mortimers 15 mtr powder puffs.
