False rumours

Tonight I banned The Great One from 1Eyed Eel. To be honest, I've been thinking of doing it since the Mateo post, which I thought was quite clearly rubbish, but given that he had been definitive with his timeframe for it happening, I figured he had a right to be proven correct. Obviously he wasn't and the quality of his posts clearly haven't improved and I just don't have the patience for that kind of crap anymore.

Two points I want to make. Some forums want you to have an online source for any rumour you post. I think that's ridiculous. It's social media sites like this that are becoming the source for more and more breaking news. On this site, members have broken news of any number of contract re-signings before it has made it into the papers, most recently Fuifui Moimoi's extension via Albert and Matt Butcher told us all about Jeff Robson re-signing before it hit the papers. However, when you do post a rumour I do ask that you qualify at least the quality of your sources, so that you give the rest of us a chance to make a fair assessment on the likelihood of it being factual.

If you're sources happen to be so good that you're not willing to reveal them, but you're definitely sure it's true then say so, but if they turn out to be incorrect and I feel like you've deliberately misled everyone, you will not be welcome back.

This is an open forum and gossip is gossip, but you do hurt the credibility of the site when you post incorrect information.

Finally, guys, it's wise to be read any rumours with a critical eye, especially from members who are new to the site and therefore don't have a reputation risk.

You can ban someone, but what's to stop them getting a new account? I think people need to use their common sense when they read a post like the Mateo one and take it for what it is and not post back to it. By doing that you give chops the satisfaction. I'm sure he's just sitting back laughing at everyone....

Rumours and inuendo are always a good laugh, the funny thing about sites requesting sources, is that some of the bigger apparently more reliable sources are full of just as much bullshit, as tool who spread the Mateo rumour! I mate and I used to Danny Weidlers moblie number and at random every few weeks we would SMS him with some total crap story such as "Ashton Sims about to sign with Parra" He would always sms back asking who we were and where we got our story from, we would never reply, but that didnt stop him! Sure enough theres Danny and his super should pads and horrid perm on tv telling everybody about is hot inside scoop!
Until you hear it from the Club or player, don't believe it

  Yeah a mate of mine would post stuff on the Bulldogs debate page that was deliberately untrue to raise the attention of Danny Weidler - who would duly report it as 'his mail'. Of course, the Dogs fans on that page knew what was going on and were in on the joke ;-)

It's pretty clear that The Great One, mutonchops, chops, 4wheels (have I missed any) are the same individual. Pay careful attention to the types of spelling errors and general tone and its very similar.

Can you screen your members' IP addresses Phil to prevent yet another reincarnation of this utter clown??

No, but I've lost patience with grubs. I'm generally all for free speech and an open forum, but I think its pretty clear no one wants the site to get boggeed down in crap so I'm going to be far less hesitant to use the ban button.

    It's pretty much impossible to ban someone who doesn't want to be banned. People can use public computers or get dynamic IP addresses to get around IP filtering and you can of course create as many email addresses as you want. We've got multiple moderators now, so I don't see there being an issue.

  Anyway, its not a new phenomenon to this site, nor will it be the last time that someone crops up, wanting to spoil it for everyone else. There are plenty of "Keyboard heroes" in this world, but the less airtime we give these guys, responding to their meaningless posts, the quicker they will tire of stirring everyone up.

Wouldn't it be great to meet someone like this at a pub and have them say this sort of crap. They wouldn't be talking for very long.
