Effort!

We’ve all heard BA talk about effort recently in the pressers”The effort was there” “ The boys tried hard” and if you only look at player statistics they back up his claims. But that’s a certain type of effort and a reason why we’re in our current predicament. When you look at a players game stats it’ll tell you tackles made , hit ups and metres made ect ect but what they don’t tell you is intangibles. The intangibles are where effort has a more profound effect on the result. That’s things like kick pressure. Kick pressure isn’t the sole responsibility of the marker or speed men but the entire frontline defence. Effort in this area gives you better field position as well as rushing the attacking team forcing mistakes.Decoy runners and support play are other areas where effort is better indicator of effort. When was the last time you saw a game where our players were pushing up in support constantly, certainly not this year.Kick chase, a bug bear of mind. Urgency to cut down the attacking teams abillity to gain momentum with their sets starts with this. Probably the truest effort indicator in the game.Line speed is a team indicator of effort. With defence being attitude , line speed is about effort. One thing you’ll notice about the effort areas highlighted are there efforts which benefit the team not the individual and my opinion the crux of our current problems. Players are playing for themselves stuffing their stat sheets but aren’t putting in the required effort off the ball for the teams benefit.Watch Matangi for example, runs off the back fence for the first hit up then thinks his jobs done and sits out the back for the rest of the set. Tep gets a lot of grief on here but he and Gower are the only forwards prepared to run a decoy and push up in support. Without Jennings on the kick chase we’d have nobody to put pressure on the opposition. No one leads our defensive line and I can’t recall a single player put decent pressure on a kicker all year. The team isn’t going to start winning until we put in efforts for the greater good of the team as well as padding our stats. Stop playing selfish and play as a unit . Until I see that I see no effort.

  • agree

  • Spot on Bup, what is even more concerning is last week the individual effort wasn't there either, we could be on the end of some big defeats over the remainder of the season.

  • Absolutely spot on. 100% agree.

    Marker defence is another.

Your point about Tep and Gower pushing up as decoys is extremely valid. That stuff is energy sapping but the good teams just get it done.

  • This would have to very close to the worst Eels team in their club history! Including coach.

    • Agreed
    • I don't agree......on paper they are potentially one of the better.

They aren't playing to potential and for that reason its on the coach - he is showing he cant inspire  and get them focussed on the game. They are telling him in no uncertain terms that he has to go. Lets hope once the review gets done, the players can admit this fact.

      • You maybe be right there Frank...but if it’s true and many of these jokers are tanking for so long, please don’t tell me you’d have the guilty parties  stay??

and if they are motivated enough to play so badly  and hold the club and fans to ransom, why can’t they motivate themselves enough to earn their fat pay packets. I’d say piss off to them first if that’s the case.

    • Agreed
  • In the past, the one thing we had was the ability to play as a unit...not flash just sticking solid together. Reckon that’s the biggest difference for us this year. A team like ours can get away with it somewhat, if we have some decent combos and support play as well and apart from the Jennings bros who don’t see anywhaere near enough opportunity, we have zero combos...seems no one is on Moses’ page with his kicking game...our kick chase is very reminiscent of the Sandow days...no interest, lazy or don’t know what’s going on and tbh his kicks haven’t really given the chasers much either .
Therefore, I’m kinda looking forward to seeing if Normz can conjure up something without Moses’ presence tonight and I’m still not too sure about the Moses affect at all.
Shame Hayne isn’t fit enough to fill in Moses’ spot with guth at the back...I’d like to see something steady like that.

Fully agree about Tep and Gower (the stats that don’t show) and surprises me constanatly about the grief they cop here.

We will really miss Tep and Mau’s efforts tonight.

    • Our combinations have been poor no doubt Mace and without knowing the inner workings of players relationships with each other off the paddock it’s hard to tell if it’s professional or personal combinations providing the problems.we can assume though and it’s certainly not hard to see on veils communications are being affected.

"Whose going to do the main goal kicking this year? Moses, Pezet, Russell ? Or maybe another? Pezet is very good. Moses very good, Russell ok but struggles with kicks that are closer to the sidelines. "

"Just no injuries please. I dont care if we lose. Means nothing if we rock up to Melbourne round 1 and get flogged.
Mitch should kick a few balls, make 1-2 tackles, pass the ball once or twice and then come off.
