With everything being written and said about the Eels one would think the season is a write off already. Despite missing opportunities in so many games this year we are just 4 points out of the 8 and playing some of the best attacking footy we have played in years. And yes the edge defence has been bad, and often.
I have been following the Eels since the early 80's and despite moving to NZ 8 years ago I continue to follow the Eels year after year hoping that this could be our year. Despite the lean years I have enjoyed the footy except for a couple of seasons ago when our two previous coaches coached not only losing sides but footy that was dull and uninteresting to watch except for the odd moment of brilliance by a one Jarred Hayne.
Then along comes Brad Arthur. I did not know much about him and hoped that we would sign Jason Taylor. But since he has been there the Eels have become enjoyable to watch again and I thought last year they showed in 70% of their games that they should have been playing with the big boys in September and even contending for the title. And then there was this year. Without Hayne I reckon we have played an exciting brand of footy and scored some amazing tries. If you had only watched the games against the Bunnies and Manly and the first half of the Cowboys game you would think we were a top 4 team. I think Brad Arthur is the real deal and the players don't say they want to play for just anyone, especially the top players. Brad Arthur should continue to coach and we should back him and give him time to get this side firing.
So ok we were are going to have to have a few guys step up at hooker and full back and need some luck with injuries but I reckon we can steal a top 8 spot this year. Regardless of whether we do make it or not or whether a K Foran runs out for us next year I will be following the blue and golds and not giving up on the boys.
Let's get behind the boys and dare to dream again!
