The cult winger’s manager Cameron Phelps said the Fijian international initially complained of discomfort with his hand prior to departing for Fiji, however a series of X-rays and medical checks could find nothing wrong.
However, after arriving back in the small island nation, Sivo’s hand “blew up” to such a worrying size, the 26-year-old was told to undergo immediate surgery.
After consultation with Parramatta, concerned Eels officials then ordered their star winger onto a flight late Monday night so that he could be operated on in Sydney.
“So we’re still not exactly sure what is wrong,” Phelps said.
“It could be a bite, who knows?
“Maika had hurt the hand before heading over to Fiji but, after undergoing some X-rays and stuff, there didn’t seem to be anything really wrong with it.
“But then when he was over there, it really blew up.
“We’re not sure what caused the infection.
“I know they wanted to operate on him in Fiji but Parramatta have flown him home.”
Sivo flew into Nadi midway through November, having represented Fiji at the 2019 Oceania Cup tournament.
