Eels snare Qld Cup star

Cairns Queensland Cup standout Tom Humble has shunned late offers from North Queensland and Wests Tigers to sign a two-year deal with the Parramatta Eels. The Eels have been in negotiations with Humble throughout the year but North Queensland weighed in with a late offer following the recent serious knee injury to Matt Bowen. Humble, who has been playing five-eighth for the Northern Pride, is also a talented fullback and had been offered the starting fullback position with the Cowboys in the absence of Bowen. A former North Queensland Under 20 player, Humble told The Cairns Post he would have preferred to stay in his local area but has remained loyal to Parramatta and inked a two-year deal. His Northern Pride coach Andrew Dunemann said the Eels were rewarded for identifying Humble's potential earlier in the year."I think they were one of the first ones to show genuine interest in him. He did testing there and got the best results in a couple of areas for the whole club so that shows they are getting a pretty good player,’’ Dunemann said.According to The Townsville Bulletin the Eels were "able to provide a two-year deal that was substantially more lucrative than rival NRL clubs could offer".The signing must raise questions as to whether the Eels will be able to offer Jeff Robson a deal that would convince him to stay with the club. Robson has fielded lucrative offers from the ESL, according to reports.

  • - First comment is that I have never herd of this kid let alone seen him play. So my comments could be a little premature
    - As discussed yesterday whilst Tom may be a standout in the Qld Cup, the NRL is a different show altogether. Question marks will remain until proven otherwise.
    - I not sure how our recruitment strategy works when you read we have offered and I quote ' a substantially more lucrative offer then other NRL clubs' unquote to a unkown and untested player in the NRL when we already have a player in Robson but also more importantly how we have also let some fine NYC players go.
    - I hope this kid works out cause it looks like we have paid some $ for him aand at the expense of our own talent.
  • Tom Humble is a great snare. Been a standout all year in the Qld Cup. Can kick goals as well.
  • Brisbane have relied on the talent of QLD cup for years.
  • This is good news I have been following his progress in our local paper and I think he will be fantastic as a back up half for our team. He knows how to get to the line and has scored some great tries for Northern Pride. He has a great step and a good turn of speed and can kick goals as well. Also his defence is solid. He is a good signing and will add more depth to what will be a strong team next year. Can't wait.
  • yes this will be a great signing for us.
i guess this means bye bye robbo.but this is a good depth signing. i know mitchell is likely to get the no. 14 jersey, but is this humble guy a chance of getting that bench spot
  • It's an interesting signing of Humble. From all reports he is very talented and good enough to be decent first grader, with him primed to win QLD cup player of the year.

The interesting point is why exactly have we signed him? Have we signed him as a an outside back? Have we signed him as half? Have we signed him as a Utility?

Is the plan for him to start in first grade next season? Imo i can't really see where he would get a start in our squad, we already have a surplus of quality outside backs, and we have KK and Morts primed to be our starting halves next season. However parra must have given Humble some sort of extra incentive to come to us, he knows he could have gone straight into fullbck for the cowboys next season, and he is from the Townsville area so it just makes sense.

IT doesnt make sense for a kid from Nth Qld to come to Parramatta, to play NSW Cup which is an inferior competition compared to the QLD Cup where Humble has already proven to be a class above.

I am excited about this signing, as obviously Humble can play footy and he is only 20 years old so he will only improve. However it puts further doubt in my mind over the future of Jeff Robson and it even makes me unfortunately once agains question the futures of Grothe and Burt.
    • just depth probably. i doubt robbo will be resigned with the news coming that u.k clubs are interested in him.

maybe he'll get a crack at the no 14 that will likely be left open by kinga.

maybe ando sees him as a better organiser than KK and wants him to play 7......i hope not cause KK deserves it. i would be happy to see KK and humble battle it out for a spot.
  • He has been great in the QLD cup, which according to the experts is a much stronger competition than its NSW counterpart.
  • Nobody probably cares... But I designed the Northern Pride logo... ;) Maybe I should have a crack at a more traditional Parra logo and flick it through to Ozzy... lol
  • It looks like DA sees some talent in Humble and I am wondering if Robson is not resigned will Humble and Mortimer will be groomed as the halves with K.Keating moving to hooker. I know Humble is not proven at NRL level, but from all reports he is good enough. KK would give us speed and creativity from dummy half and with Mortimer calling the shots from half, our backline will see good quallity ball. M.Keating as a back up if injuries occur. Your thoughts?
