Eels look certain to get their man

I’m prepared to go out on a limb here and declare that Parramatta has gotten Willie Tonga over the line. It's obviously not official yet but I can see the fat lady over yonder belting out a yodel.

Today, I received information from someone close to the Sharks camp, that Cronulla have accepted they’ve missed out on Tonga. I’d already basically come to that conclusion - had their offer hit the mark, we’d have almost certainly read or heard more about it now. I’m confident Cronulla were the only club who were in the running to steal Tonga away from the Eels.

And while there seems to be a very tight clamp on the issue within Parramatta officialdom, I’d describe the presiding mood as stoic confidence.

So if you were betting on the issue, I’d be telling you to get on at any odds.

Tonga has the opportunity to play out his career alongside up-and-coming brother Esi. He has the chance to return to his boyhood club and link up with former Eels teammates and close friend Reni Maitua. It appears that a bit of extra cash in the pocket, hasn’t been enough to de-rail those plans, which have clearly been in the pipeline for months, if not since last year when a move to Parramatta was first mooted.

His signing will give the Eels backline another touch of class that will further help tranform this outfit into a contender. With Tonga on one side, most likely playing outside of his brother, and young gun Jacob Loko on the other, Parramatta suddenly have genuine strike power out wide on both sides of the park.

Contract negotiations ebb and flow. This one’s been in the bag. It’s been out of the bag. As far as I can tell, those negotiations are all but finished now. The bidding has ended and the gavel is set to drop.

Welcome home, Willie.

  • Good news, he will give us some class that we are sorely lacking out wide.
  • Phil,

    you 100% correct,

I had never doubted him coming to the eels.

My source from the Gala Night said we had him back then and no matter what the chatter was with a late bid by the sharkies it was just a storm in a tee cup. Just wish it were the storm we were talking about and that would have sounded pretty good.

I even question Henry's Dream from the min the rumour got out that the conversations people were having "whispers" could have been a way to increase his price but it prob was a last min bid by the sharkies and thats what the rumour was based on. No Doubt someone in sharkies land knew they were interested in it and came up with some bullshit bidding war over Tonga. Waiting for it to become official this week or next.
