in 2019 the club lowballed an offer of under 500K which was ridiculous. Gutho diserved to have shits (think it was $460K) They upped to approx $2M and he signed.
Then 2021 upped $2.3M till end of next year that was widely reported.

Sounds like Gutho and his agent wanted 2026 and beyond sorted out but MON and Ryles weren't prepared to make him an offer until they see how he performs in his new position(s). Fair call from the Eels given we don't know what that new position Gutho will be playing is worth $.
I can also see Gutho's side, he wants security and to lock in a few more years... whether that is with his current club or a new club. Will be interesting development in the off season and how many years and how much other clubs (most likely Dragons) are willing to offer Gutho.

of course Gutho needs to know where he stands. Shame we didn't see his value as an all rounder and mentor. Certainly our young side will need it and as much as most think it's good to move him on, I'm very sure it's a bad call.

his current contract is not 900k though it's a bit less than that widely bandied around amount as I recall.

If we are only valuing him as a mentor, then he would not sign as the contract would be minimal. If we are to value him as an all rounder as you say, then I think the club is doing the right thing, we all assume he can play in the middle or at hooker if needed, but we haven't seen him do it yet. Defending in the front line will be a massive adjustment for him and JR probably wants to see how he goes before offering him an extension.
If he can sure up his future elsewhere, good luck to him. I will be disappointed to see him go if he does, but the club comes first. If he is prepared to wait then we may offer him an extension in the new year, but I understand if he wants it sorted sooner.
Get what you are saying though I reckon our backline will be much stronger next year simply coz of lomax, it's a lot less work for him running around cleaning up everywhere from east to west for starters. He'll be recovered and ready to go with new coach who hopefully cleans our pathetic backline defence up! God knows the amount of extra stress and work that has added to FB role in past!
I reckon we are placing a great deal of trust in a young rookie that Penrith let go and guth mentoring him was absolutely clearly the right way to go for me.
Guth transitioning to another position later in year and easing the young bloke in.
other thing is Dylan knee will be a dodgy situ I'd say and Guth could cover there. Right now we have no one for that.
Lomax and Moses into SOO what experience or footy nous do we have in backs??
was so pleased for awhile to think we have great replacements in key spots unlike this year but Guth gone changes that completely.

I agree with what you say. Gutho is my fullback in round 1 2025 and is there to mentor Iongi into the role. But I don't see him there all year. Whilst his effort is still there, he has lost a yard of pace and gets caught out of position a bit now, especially when he has to get up in the line to defend, he just can't get across fast enough to cover. Whilst I agree that Lomax helps there, he has his own rolde to play and the good teams will continue to exploit it.
The issue is what happens in 2026? JR wants to wait and see what Gutho's value will be, and I think that is smart. He can't stay on the $$ he is on now. Let's not forget that he has just been given permission to talk to other clubs for 2026. We still can come back with an offer if he gets one elsewhere, and we don't need to let him leave before next season.
A bit of a reality check for Gutho and the club. I think this is a good thing.
Remember every contract extension Gutho and his management have played it out in the media, dragging it out over a long period, making sure the Eels paid absolutely top dollar for his services. Given Gutho and his manager's previous behaviour, I'm sure they feel supremely confident that Gutho can still get elite money in the NRL. I predict they'll find their position will have to change dramatically over the next few weeks / months. No doubt clubs would definitely take Gutho, he's a very good player, sometimes he's a great player. But no chance he's getting offers at $900k or even close to it. Reality can be a harsh teacher.
