Eels Hold On To Defeat Panthers in Toyota Cup

Official Club ReportThe Pirtek Parramatta Eels have survived a scare to claim back to back wins in the Toyota Cup, defeating the Penrith Panthers 24-18 at Parramatta Stadium.The Eels led 16-nil early only to let the Panthers back in it, the score 20-18 as the full time siren sounded.A try after the bell to TK Amosa secured the win, the Eels scoring five tries to three on their way to a six point victory.Repeat sets on the Panthers line earned the Eels first points, Joel Latham offloading for Rory Brien to score wide out on the left for a four-nil lead after eight minutes.Converted tries in quick succession to Jason Baitieri and Brien saw the Eels take a commanding 16-nil lead, before Stirling Siejka narrowed the gap to 10 with a converted try of his own five minutes out from the break.The second half was just two minutes old when the Panthers struck again, Andrew Pongi diving over from dummy half for Siejka to convert, the visitors scrambling their way back into the contest at 16-12.The Eels went 100 metres in a set to strengthen their lead soon after, the passage starting with a penalty for a Jesse Sene-Lefao high shot on Dan Cross in the in goal and finishing with a Domenic Nasso in and away try.Jaydin Tavita’s kick went wide however the Eels lead was back out past a converted try at 20-12.Both sides lost players to the sin bin after tensions boiled over midway through the half, the Eels forced to do without half TK Amosa while the Panthers lost lock Blake Austin.The Panthers made the most of the situation with pro Sam McKendry forcing his way over to narrow the gap to two points at 20-18.The knockout blow went the way of the Eels after full time, Amosa making up for his sin binning by scoring an intercept try to make the final score 24-18.TOYOTA CUPPirtek Parramatta Eels 24 (Rory Brien 2, Jason Baitieri, Domenic Nasso, TK Amosa tries; TK Amosa 1 goal from 2 attempts; Jaydin Tavita 1 goal from 2 attempts; Jason Baitieri 0 goals from 1 attempt) defeated the Penrith Panthers 18 (Stirling Siejka, Andrew Pongi, Sam McKendry tries; Stirling Siejka 3 goals from 3 attempts) At Parramatta Stadium.
