Eels Defence

I really hope that with our new aquisitions for this year it brings more defensive steel to the group. Now I know that our defence was a huge part of our run to the finals but it is the aggression and steel that i want from the boys. Even in the games we were winning the other packs still were making too many metres up the middle in their sets. it was very rare for us to get a team down on their tryline and box them inside their own 30 metre line. im my opinion i would really like to see an emphasis on hard drving defence so if we get stuck in a grind we dont have to always push the pass to get out of trouble. anyways just my observations what do you guys think?

  • We should be better this year now that Mr Fairleigh is no longer our defensive coach.
  • with poore and shackleton we have bigger men to monster the opposition.
    • I think having Peter Sharp back at the Eels was the best off-season recruitment decision.
Our defence will be much better this year.

Thinking about our defence, I still have fond memories of the game against the Knights in 2001 (the game we won 40 -0, not the GF!). Ben Kennedy was running at first receiver 100km/h and it looked like there was nothing that could stop him. Mick Vella had other ideas. He sprinted off the line and put a huge shot on Kennedy, knocking him backwards. Now that is committed defence!!!
    • Fitness will be very important in 2010. Every team's fitness has gone up 2 notches this season. We need to smash that by even more.
  • This may be a post which shows how little I know about football, but I think that our defence has almost always been amazing.

I know the point you are making refers to the metres gained up the middle, but I think that is largely the result of our forward pack not being as dominant as some of the other packs of the NRL.Perhaps now with Justine Poore (we want more) and some our other guys like Super Mannah gaining a bit more experience, this shouldn't be so much of a problem. It has never really been our style anyway to box other teams in their corners.

The defence on our own line however is a different story. Parramatta show grit, determination and guts when we are camped on our own line. I am always so proud when we manage to keep teams out for so long, and I can only see this improving!
    • ur right u do no little lol jk
  • Agreed, very happy to have Peter Sharp back, our defence should be solid. If your defence is soolid then yoou put yourself in a position to win every game.
  • Our forward pack speaks for itself , add the big hits from hayne ,tahu ,inu ,reddy and grothe in the backline and i cant wait to smash any team we play .
  • Teams will be s%&t scared to spread the ball once Tahu & inu start running out of the line and smashing a few, and moi moi's defence was getting better.
