Parramatta have suffered a late blow ahead of Easter Monday’s clash against the Wests Tigers with in-form backrower Bryce Cartwright officially ruled out.

Cartwright suffered a rib injury against Manly and was initially set to miss up to a month of football.

Coach Brad Arthur named Cartwright in the hope the forward would be able to manage the injury through pain management.

But Arthur confirmed on Sunday morning that Cartwright has been unable to train

“We were hopeful. We gave him every opportunity to play but he’s not right to play,” Arthur said.

“I feel like Carty has earned the right to ... he asked me early in the week to give him every opportunity to play and he’s playing nice and tough now and he has earned the right for that to happen.

“I feel like Carty has earned the right to ... he asked me early in the week to give him every opportunity to play and he’s playing nice and tough now and he has earned the right for that to happen.

“He’s done a really good job for us coming off the bench, which is different to starting. But he’ll get a chance there.”

Rising playmaker Blaize Talagi will wear the no.6 jumper, with Dylan Brown moving into the halfback role, after Mitchell Moses was ruled out for up to 10 weeks with a foot injury.

Moses was spotted on crutches, and a cast on his left foot, as he arrived to Eels training on Sunday for the first time since having surgery last week.

Arthur is hopeful Moses can come back before his scheduled return date.

“I know Mitchell, he’ll be wanting to get back ahead of schedule,” Arthur said.

“He’s had surgery. He hasn’t been into training yet. I’ve spoken to him a couple of times. The pain is starting to ease a little bit. They are talking 8-10 weeks but once we get further on and he starts getting weight on his foot, we’ll see how he goes.

Arthur conceded Talagi has earned a call-up into the halves earlier than what the coach had anticipated but has backed the teenager’s toughness ahead of Monday’s clash.

“Blaize gets an opportunity ahead of when we thought he might in the halves,” Arthur said.

“He typifies what I want this team to be, tough. That was the first thing when I sat down to decide who was going to take that spot, I wanted the toughest person to take that spot.

“I knew he’ll get a couple of things wrong but we’ve seen him get a couple of things wrong against Manly … but he’s able to brush it off and get his job done.

“The longer the game went the better he got. I’m thinking the more time he gets in the no.6 jersey, the better he’ll get. If he runs the football, he front loads his effort and he’s physical, that’s all I ask for this week.”

  • The Moses comment seemed promising. 8-10 weeks but see how it goes. I stand by Brisbane RD10 he will be back, that will be 6 and a half weeks.

  • Got a sense of humour Arthur. Said  he wants the team to be tough and then he picks Lane in the team. Lanes about as tough as an egg on toast.

    • Poached, boiled, scrambled or fried egg 🥚🥚🍳

  • Hands on the bench makes no sense at all.

BA up to his old tricks again.

    • He wants another half option on the bench, but yeah not needed. Just name Greig to counter their big forwards and tire them out. Not sure Tuilagi gets full 80.

      • Hands isn't much of a halves option.

He picked Tualagi over a genuine halfback and needs to cop it if it doesn't work.

We need another forward on the bench and not a backup hooker.

I think it's going to be a tough task to beat the Tigers.

        • I dont know about a tough task to beat the Tigers, we will shit it in. BUT I agree about Hands not being a halves option.

Matterson is there and he can slot into 5/8 as well as anybody.....defensively makes us stronger. The only concern I have with the current forward pack is we will miss Cartright's mobility. none of the replacements including Tuilaga are what you call "mobile" or agile ??? Players like Ponga and Walsh will cut us to ribbons and likewise teams like Roosters and Cowboys will cut us up defensively in the middle . Hopwood and Matterson are probably the only lateral moving forwards we have with Carty gone....thats a big balance different in terms of our shape!

          • We always go in against them with the attitude that all we have to do is turn up to win.

If we do that without Moses and Cartwright and a weaker bench, the Tigers could very well beat us.

      • Fitness will be no problem LB. its concentrating for the 80 thats the challenge.

I see no need to panic like this site is tending to do and LB when you read up on the Jones fracture you will see that 6 /7 weeks simply won't happen. Especially we need Moses fully fit and not carrying an injury that negates his running and kicking game.

        • Seems to be an injury where lack of blood flow in the area hinders recovery.

club should look at platelet rich plasma injections into the site, PCP injections are great for muscoloskeletal injuries, soft tissue injuries and fractures .
