Eels Cap vs The Top 4

Yep ... buckle up, it's a blog for the bean counters. Watching the Roosters Souths game, both teams expected to be in contention for the premiership.  Its got me wondering …..  have Parra spent our cap $$ on the right positions?

Tatola, Burgess, Nicholls, Collins, and an aging JWH all get a job done, but I’m guessing we are spending huge money in comparison.

Instead of big dollars on props both have spent big on guys who can break open the game. Mitchell and Tedesco are million $ fullbacks. Radley and  Murray are quality locks with points in them and make the players around them better. Wayne Bennett was always one to who believed in not over spending on props. Interested in peoples thoughts. Would you spend less elsewhere to buy a couple of top shelf stars? Are we even spending that much more on props then these top 4 teams?

  • Any discussion on the cap is a waste of time whilst Player payments are not public and players  are allowed to take 'unders' to stay with a club.

clubs, like the Roosters, Storm and Broncos, mostly pay their players out of the cap. The Storm have the QLD/Australian hooker, NZ halfback, QLD 5/8  not to mention the Cheese and Paps - how are they all under the cap? Because they have no cap as most of the money comes from outside the cap.

To compete as the cap is currently setup the Eels need  a system similar to the Throughbreds at the Broncos or private ownership where there is less visiblilty on player payments.

  • We have spent a big portion of our money on players that can't even make a rep team .  With the exception of maybe Moses who may get a run if two or three other players are injured or suspended .

So far you'd think that Hynes may have leapfrogged him .

    • Hynes seems dangerous every time he touches the ball. He doesn't have the speed and kicking game that moses does, but still..

      • If the origin teams announced tomorrow and Clearys out , who do we  think they'd choose out of the two?

        • Moses.

He has SOO experience and his kicking game alone would get him the call up over Hynes.

          • I reckon if Cleary was out we'd see them reshuffle to fit Hynes in with someone like Reynolds before they'd hand the spot to Moses. It will certainly be interesting to see if Hynes can keep this form up all season.

            • Fittler is a massive Moses fan and he played very well in SOO last year once he was allowed to control the team.

Hynes has played well in the two games he has played but when you look at the two as an overall package (running, kicking, passing, etc), Moses is clearly on top.

              • My point is that Hynes after 2 games as his own player has improved to a level wheras he's being spoken about in comparison to these guys that've had years to forge their game out.  By the time Origin rolls around , at this rate they won't be able to omit him no matter how much uncle Benny pushes Mitch's barrow for him .

  • The Storm spend a fortune on their spine and fill the rest of the team with capable players.

Their top class spine then lifts the rest of the team to a higher level.

Unfortunately only two of our four spine players are top shelf.

    • Maybe second from the top mate , in amongst the Jack and the Bacardi . I'm assuming you're meaning Mahoney and Moses ? They have one origin game between them , and it was the unloosable loss.
