What has been the best halves pairing 7&6 since Peter Sterling and Brett Kenny?
1) Michael Buettner & Jason Taylor ( 2001)
2) Jeff Robson & Daniel Mortimer (2009)
3) Mitchell Moses & Dylan Brown ( 2022)
4) John Peard / Mark Levy & John Kolc (1977)
Or another combination

Did John Simon and Jason Smith ever play in the halves together? I remember them separately being pretty good. Smith in particular, people forget how good this bloke was at the peak of his powers.
Agree , Smith was a very great player and very underrated leader type personality.
You're only saying that cos he was probably a drinking buddy of yours in his Steelers days !!!!
Ha, not John Simon, I was talking about Smith. Although Ian Russell used to live in my street in Gwynneville and Johnny Simon was a regular visitor of his. I wasn't mates with Ian as he kept to himself mostly , but I did have a beer on occasion with him when Street cricket was on a few times a year.
Ian Russell what a footballer, every time he ran with the ball he looked dangerous, silky ball skills and should of played SOO really underrated player
Agree
John Simon and Jason Smith played as a halfs in 1998
Not full-time though. Jason Bell was used a fair bit that season.
Hindsight is an easy thing, but geez you'd love to go back and push Brian Smith for this combo. Around these years we persisted with others like penna, bell and kusto. It'd be awesome if we just stuck to a simon/smith combo and they stayed injury free for an extended period.
Although it's difficult to determine the best combo since kenny/sterlo I personally don't think it's hard at all to work out who the best five/eighth was. Although he was seen as a lock/secondrower at rep level, make no mistake about it, Smith (at the peek of his powers) was our best 6 since kenny. Basically carried our side in the years between Super League war and Brian's babes that came through together and dominiated 2001 (before the GF).
Penna was there as well, great depth of players back then
