Eels are Turning to Jelly

What could have been a possible good year with a strong possibility of making the top 4 it now appears the Eels will be very lucky to make the top 8 and even if they did they wouldn't be a threat. The Eels turning to jelly is based upon the following in my opinion:

1. Matterson missing first rounds because he refused to pay a small fine.

2. The Eels absolutely disgraceful draw from the NRL whereby Eels played some top 8 sides straight after their bye.

3. The injury to Lane

4. The Dylan Brown Tittie Touch fiasco which saw him sidelined for 7 weeks.

5. The absolute stupidity of the NSW Blues selectors picking Moses, Gutherson and RCG who have all turned to crap since Origin

6. Gutherson getting selected for Origin to play 3 minutes in a nothing game when he would have been more beneficial against the Warriors.

7. RCG getting suspended for 4 weeks for stupidity.

8. Sivo getting suspended for 4 weeks for stupidity.

9. Signing of Hodgson

10. Absolutely disgraceful recruiting by Eels recruitment

11. Eels the only team to not get a bye during Origin Series

  • We will be without Matto and Lane as well next week. How can we be in the market early in the season for attacking depth and our recruitment team failed to sign anyone all year ? We can only sign current players on massive upgrades or rejects in anticipation that we can improve them. It's time we employ a serious recruitment manager.

    • The NRL judiciairy on Matto:

"Eels forward Ryan Matterson was cited for his third and subsequent Dangerous Contact offence and now faces a $3000 fine with an early guilty plea, or two match ban if he opts to fight the charge and isn't successful."

  • Signing of Hodgson ?? Don't get it.

SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE SOON OR THIS CLUB WILL BE GOING BACKWARDS and end up in the era of Stephen kearny, ricky stuart..

    • x infinity.

It's not like the Eels haven't had a number of things go against them this season with injuries and suspensions and the club have re-signed a number of our talent and blooded some great looking up and comers. Some people just got to water and focus on doom and gloom at the first moment of hardship. We made the Grand Final last year and this season isn't over yet.

Take a chill pill. We are competitive and in with a chance which is more than most other teams can say.

    • Maybe won 6 of 8 but the 2 that have been lost have increased the deficit of the for and against which will contribute highly at end of season and making the 8. It also makes a huge dent in Eels confidence and momentum in the back end of season

      • I wish BA would have thought of the same analysis of Bellamy when he said in his post match interview the following - "It was disappointing, it was probably as disappointing a 70 minutes that I can remember, especially that first half, we lacked energy, we lacked enthusiasm, we looked like we lacked communication".
These are the same things we lacked in the cows game in the early part.

  • PT47, I agree with your points about some bad luck (injuries, suspensions), some stupidity (Brown; Matto choosing games over dollars), a really harsh draw (including no byes during Origin and an inequitable start), and some questionable recruitment (Hodgson has not worked out, and we have little backline depth).

I suggest, though, the critique of Moses and Gutho post-Origin lacks any generosity. Both players saved the Eels bacon vs Titans, and gave us a chance late vs Cowboys.

I think much of the Eels' precarious spot on the ladder comes down to a tough draw that has been complicated by continuing injuries and suspensions that have rarely seen the Eels field their first choice team.
