The Parramatta Eels Rugby League Club is pleased to announce their development squads for 2021.

With changes being implemented and ages increased for Junior Representative team (Harold Mathews Cup now 17 years and SG Ball 19 years), the Eels have revamped and placed a greater focus on their Development Squads for 2021.

Moving forward the Eels will now facilitate both a North & South for the following age groups. U14’s U15’s Senior Development U16/17’s By facilitating two squads per age group, this concept will now allow the Eels to focus on developing even more players from within the local Junior League than ever before.

“Dividing our development squads into north and south will increase our capacity to deliver quality programs for our young, aspiring athletes. Additionally, having two locations will make it easier for the players to attend training sessions as travel time for many will be reduced. From a football perspective, it will also give us the opportunity to develop more players, improve their skill level and provide an opportunity to play games against each other." said Parramatta Eels General Manager of Football Mark O’Neill.

All players selected, must confirm their position in their Development Squad via email to pdjrl@parraeels.com.au by Friday 13th November 2020. Information on an induction night in early December will be emailed to you upon confirming your attendance. All players listed will be required to attend the induction evening and players will not be able to take part in the squad until they have attended their induction.

  • This seems like a good move.

    • The eels web site has a list of the three grades affected and players that will be part of the programs.

      • Thanks Col, I did not want to post it all, but yes they do. Squads of at least 36 to about 50 sor the 16/17's. It seems to be a change as I heard they were not doing the 14's / 15's. Glad they changed.

  • So what's happened to Jersey Flegg ?

    • Nothing has come out as yet Brett, the only other announcement that has been made can be found here https://www.parraeels.com.au/news/2020/10/16/eels-confirm-2021-haro...

I would hope that we will find out the players that will be part of JF if its still in the plans same with Canterbury cup.  Can only imagine that the club is getting the player rosters together for next season prior to the main break, and they will likely come together for a few weeks before that break.

      • "Page not found" colin

Eels confirm 2021 Harold Matthews & SG Ball squads
The Parramatta Eels is delighted to announce the junior squads to contest the Harold Matthews and SG Ball Cup competitions in 2021.
        • Try link below Mushy, its working for me with that one, and got the page not found with the first link.  If it still doesn't work go to the eels home page https://www.parraeels.com.au/  go to the column on left hand side and click on the top item NEWS, you then go down the page until getting to a pic that shows junior league players and underneath is the Eels confirm the squads, it was put up 2 weeks ago.

    • Brett I think it will still be as per normal, thats what I have been told anyway. I was shocked with these squads as the word coming from Parra before was that they were cutting $$$$ on Junior reps such as 14/15s. To me this is a good move. I think there has been a bit of discussion around this, and some with differing views! Its a good move and a must for me. We cannot let these young guys go. I am up on the Central Coast and know Easts have junior development from 13/14's onwards. They have a headquarters at the Local High School at The Entrance / Bateau Bay set up with two renovated training ovals, an office and signage, and have their central coast teams training up here. They have taken over the central coast.

        • Poppa I have no idea but i was hearing that Parra was doing away with some of the junior teams....all i can assume is that they have had a change of heart, as I was def told they were doing away with some junior teams. I know the Daley and Johns Cups have been cut ( again was told) by the league. Its interesting M O'Neill was the spokesman for the announcement.

Yes agree about the communication, and I will ask about the trials for these players and what this includes along with if they actually play any games or merely train. I know Parra used to go in the country cup out west for 14-15's before Laurie Daley and Johns came in.

Its not rocket science to know that they have to capture the good ones and keep, and to me you only do this by identifying them as early on as possible. With no NSW / QLD carnivals this year for older players it will be different and means clubs have to rely on local knowledge and clubs. I found the penrith article very good as those older guys know the areas in their junior clubs and have affiliation across the mountains too. Parra have had a plethora of changes to junior coaches etc. in Matts / Ball etc. and they just have to make a decision and stick with it. Its not difficult. As you said Poppa the amount of players who go to other clubs as youngsters is good for them but we seem to have missed a couple which happens.....but we need tried and trusted scouts out there who have the knowledge to see who is coming through.

"Yep, I'd much rather Paulo on our side than in the opposition. He had one of his best seasons for many years this year and is still strong and skilful. As you say, I can see Junior in a mentoring role for the younger players."

"Add to that the long list of rookies at the club, many of which were thrown into NRL last season. It's not quite Dad's Army, but the club does need to ensure that we continue to have the right mix of experience and youth."

"Yeah if we didn't sign de Belin with the chance we keep him for 2027 i would feel much better. It all depends on how father time goes about it. Does he decline faster? Or is Ryles using him very well to the point he adds value in other areas? Having…"
